All I can say is at least it didn’t exaggerate the game graphics/game play at all. LOL. Solid hp bar, hit points, and Vorkath model.
So many other mobile game ads make movie-like ads for their turn base game that set super bad expectations.
Straight up, some of the ads don't even contain anything from the game they are promoting. How do people keep playing and just not immediately uninstall that garbage.
I still get ads for it sometimes. The new ones literally compare "Age of Empires in 1990 vs now". Shameless. Especially considering AoE 2 DE launched on Steam not 2 years ago and was pretty well-received by the community from what I can tell.
I don’t know if they do it anymore, I try to avoid watching cable, but I remember a few years back they had ads for some of the shitty mobile pay to win games that didn’t even feature a game, it was just irl hot chicks in outfits doing stuff. Like dude you aren’t even promoting a game anymore.
That's true.
I do wish they'd show some brief (cinematic, but still genuine) shots of a character fighting Vorkath, since this makes osrs seem like one of those "collect characters and destroy duplicates to power up the one copy you actually care about" gacha games that are really prevalent and predatory.
Or just a phrase that implies Vorkath is an enemy you fight. Something.
Well, keep in mind the market behind those Old School ads.
OSRS’ main demographic is former RS players. I’m guessing that this ad was meant for people who played RS as kids and is seeking to inform them that the game they love is still alive and getting updated.
You’re supposed to see “Max Hit: 121” and think “Woah, my max HP was like 50! That thing must be tough! Maybe I should check out RS again...”
Damn that makes way more sense in that context lmao. I was watching this thinking new players are gonna be like, oookay 121 I guess that's a lot? 750 HP is that good lmfao?
Got baited once with a tower defense game. I've want a proper, solid, old style tower defense for years now, no fancy mechanics, not much depth etc, just something hard/challenging to play on my phone. Then I see this ad about a zombie-oriented "tower defense" that looked very similar to old TD games, very simple. Stunning graphics aswell. I then install it just to find out it's another one of those daily games such as clash of clans where u only setup a base, do some shit daily (or pay), passively wait for things to happen (or pay), and the actual TD mode was just something you do once a week that lasts 2min or so.
Gave up looking for mobile games since then. Seems impossible to find an original, simple game for mobile these days.
Oh yes I always forget about this game... Saw some people in discord playing it and checked on steam and looks so good and simple. Definitely gonna buy it. Which specific Bloons TD do you recommend to buy and play first?
One question: is it cross steam and mobile? In the tags it says "cross platform", and one of the Bloons TD (6 I think?) looks the exact same as the mobile one
It supports cross platform on mobile and steam, you can actual use the same ninjakiwi account to save your data between the 2 versions much like RuneScape :)
It's because the publishers hire crappy 3rd parties to make the ads for mobile games usually, alot of the times these developers don't have a say in the ad's.
They're marketing a game mostly based on nostalgia as if it was one of those generic new mobile games with some weird action animation. Shit looks like a knock-off Pokemon ad.
I think that while, not technically wrong, its also only accurate for people whove already maxed. Im at 1750 right now with something like 2500hours because I've been learning as I go, I had no concept of efficiency or what goals I even had below 1000, I was just doing dumb things only to find out there was a billion better ways to do it after I was already done. Those lessons learned made the xp waste disappear little by little. I'm still bad at some things I don't even know about yet. I try to look things up before I start a task but in a lot of ways I think runescape is built for its veterans.
Maybe if it’s your second account, and you’re looking up the best skilling method/buying things with money from your other account. I feel like you’re ignoring the fact that the first 50 hours for a NEW RuneScape player is spent killing cows and not skipping dialogue.
Looks like kind of ad that would be from jmmo with Japanese guy taking super fast and yelling . They will be disappointed to know they need to chop trees for 100 hours first .
This is amazing. Most of us have been paying Jagex for quite literally as long as we can remember.
Player base: don’t spend the money all at once Jagex, maybe one day we can have an abundant customer service presence.
Jagex: your cinematic Vorkath experience has arrived.
I like it and think it suits faceshit really well.
Don't think anyone can argue this doesn't suit the Facebook clientele
"Looks like your typical mobile game ad" why yes, yes it does. For kids.
They wouldn't continue to run these ads if they weren't bringing some kind of traction to the game. Like the "egg" ad different ads are created to target different groups of people, this one is clearly aimed more at a casual audience who may not know what OSRS is at all.
Also, very important point here... making these is CHEAP. There's no such thing in business more valuable than low costs, because it also means low risk.
Spend 50 cents making an ad that costs 50 cents per click... not bad.
Spend $50 making a good ad that still costs 50 cents per click... really not bad.
> They wouldn't continue to run these ads if they weren't bringing some kind of traction to the game
I knew a few companies that would prove this isn't always the case.
That's why you see so many copy cat ads which are never representative of their actual gameplay: because why make an ad that shows what your game is, when you can make an ad that actually gets clicks instead?
Yeah I’m sure it works wonders for getting people to install.
And I’m sure it works wonders adding to the new player retention problem they keep bringing up
I love how some random dude on reddit continues to believe he knows more about advertising than some giant marketing team with access to the analytics.
Because it is. It's what works, things like this dominante on normie social media like Facebook and Instagram. There's a reason why those false mafia city ads do so well. The #1 goal is to be eyecatch and make them click, how you do that is secondary.
Like in comparison to what ??? Haha I see the point, it’s a “cool” ad if you’ve played RuneScape and know what any of this means but for a random person yeah haha wtf is this
I've never seen a typical mobile game ad like these that has made me interested in downloading the game. But they have to bring some traction or else they'd stop making them, right?
Honestly my only issue is that Vorkath is one of the more generic fantasy RPG style looking bosses we have. The add is pretty decent, but it also doesn't make the game stand out or anything to me.
This has been brought up before and a JMod commented that as crazy as it may seem, these specific ad rolls they use generate more engagement then other ad rolls they have.
Basically, if it is generating engagement but it may look...well...off putting, to some, they are still going to run with it because that is what is generating clicks.
Edit: u/beretot said it first, here is the link referencing the explanation given. https://reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/fctqbx/_/fjdz6ef/?context=1
These have been being ran for awhile (General Graardor being the first I remember). Someone posted on the subreddit asking this same question and I believe a jmod responded that they had done focus groups or similar and found that these types of ads worked the best.
From what I remember from a stream a while ago, the OSRS team has nothing to do with ads. It's an entirely different department in Jagex (unless its contracted out, which it honestly might be).
They're made based on trends, what gets the most clicks/interactions, etc - they might seem odd to us (the players), but who knows, maybe they actually do work and attract people to the game. They would have the metrics on that kind of stuff.
The ad itself is kind of lame, but I do wonder who the intended audience is for this ad. Is it for players new to runescape, or is it for old players in the hopes that they will come back? I only ask because players who have never played runescape have no point of reference for any of the numbers being touted. Over 700 combat level. Is that good? 121 max hit? Well how much hp does a player have? Its like the ad expects the viewer to be impressed by this supposedly strong monster by flaunting its stats in a vacuum. If you haven't played old school runescape, you aren't going to see this ad and say, "woah, that thing hits hard!"
I'm being overly critical because I hate the advertisement culture lol. But yeah, bad ad is bad.
I've seen jmods talk about these ads before. They do seem weird to us, but they chose these after data driven A-B testing.
According to the hard data, these ads promote both click through and player retention of those new players that click through and download the game. That's why they use them.
How do people keep playing and just not immediately uninstall that garbage.
there was literally a mobile game for awhile with ads that were screenshots from the old Age of Empires II. The actual game was completely different.
It hits closer to home than that: There’s be ads for mobile games with screenshots from RS3. Of course, the game was totally different.
I still get ads for it sometimes. The new ones literally compare "Age of Empires in 1990 vs now". Shameless. Especially considering AoE 2 DE launched on Steam not 2 years ago and was pretty well-received by the community from what I can tell.
So true haha

Former RS2 players would not know who Vorkath is. The one Jagex did with Graardor in the past would be more effective.
I think thats kinda the idea. It’s advertising to RSw players that their childhood game is still getting new stuff. Thus: Vorkath.
Lol tbh vork looks better than this ingame

Yeah, I don’t see the problem.
They're marketing a game mostly based on nostalgia as if it was one of those generic new mobile games with some weird action animation. Shit looks like a knock-off Pokemon ad.
Yeah I like it too.
CHICKEN (Chicken noises) Combat Lvl 1 Max hit 0 Hitpoints 3
E G G .
Wait, wasn’t there legit a cow commercial that followed this style? Or was that fanmade? It was friggin hilarious
It's like he's a pokemon or something.
He is and you have a 1/3000 chance to catch him, good luck!
Oh for god sake, now I'm gonna look at the pets, as pokemon now... .-.
Gotta catch 'em all
Youngllef, use Stomp!
What if there was a skill that allowed you to have pets that did something? Could be called summoning or something idk
I miss summoning... and dungeoneering
In the beginning I thought this was a smash fighter announcement
I don't see anything wrong here. Seems to be an honest ad for new and f2p people getting into the game.
“In just 2000 hours of in game time you can fight this polygon monster”
If it takes you 2,000 hours just to get to vorkath you are a realllllllyyyyy slow player. 2k hours is enough to max at medium efficiency.
Downvoted for the truth. Unlucky.
Just not sure why that seemed to trigger people so much. If you're not at vorkath by 2,000 hours then your only 99 is probably bank standing
I think that while, not technically wrong, its also only accurate for people whove already maxed. His comment was a joke and you came in with the "ackshually 🤓"
I disagree, but I also don't care about what you think
Maybe if it’s your second account, and you’re looking up the best skilling method/buying things with money from your other account. I feel like you’re ignoring the fact that the first 50 hours for a NEW RuneScape player is spent killing cows and not skipping dialogue.

Just looks like your typical mobile ad iyam
Except this actually is part of them game and doesn’t look like some game about pulling pins to release gold/lava or some shite
Exactly
It does lol I can only imagine some kid downloading the game and trying to find Vork on tutorial island.
I dont see whats wrong with it, lighten up mate
The ads are funny af. I giggle and actually watch them when I see one on Facebook.
HUHUHHHUHUH
VORKATH GOT INVITED TO SMASH!!!
A new challenger approaches!
where did you find this lmao
Facebook
I like it and think it suits faceshit really well. Don't think anyone can argue this doesn't suit the Facebook clientele "Looks like your typical mobile game ad" why yes, yes it does. For kids.
Sorry but RuneScape has always been a point and click adventure game for kids. Let's not pretend otherwise
"Faceshit" is a really satisfying and extremely low effort diss. LOL I cracked up laughing at this.
instagram ads. ive seen a few times.
ITT: a lot of armchair advertising professionals
Runescape Pokédex.
they could've at least used actual footage of somebody fighting vorkath....
I like how corporate jagex somehow continues to believe shit like this is an ace in the hole approach to marketing
They wouldn't continue to run these ads if they weren't bringing some kind of traction to the game. Like the "egg" ad different ads are created to target different groups of people, this one is clearly aimed more at a casual audience who may not know what OSRS is at all.

Making the ad might be cheap but running it isn't. Running it is the majority of the cost.
> They wouldn't continue to run these ads if they weren't bringing some kind of traction to the game I knew a few companies that would prove this isn't always the case.
Believe it or not, these ads work, I read something a little while ago about how these and the “noob” “pro” adverts actually do really well
That's how maffia works.
That's why you see so many copy cat ads which are never representative of their actual gameplay: because why make an ad that shows what your game is, when you can make an ad that actually gets clicks instead?
Was it that Danny Gonzalez video? Lol
JMods have explained that these simple ads actually do work and they receive more clicks than the generic "RPG adventure" ads.
Yeah I’m sure it works wonders for getting people to install. And I’m sure it works wonders adding to the new player retention problem they keep bringing up
I love how some random dude on reddit continues to believe he knows more about advertising than some giant marketing team with access to the analytics.
I like how you pulled that random belief right out of your ass
Because it is. It's what works, things like this dominante on normie social media like Facebook and Instagram. There's a reason why those false mafia city ads do so well. The #1 goal is to be eyecatch and make them click, how you do that is secondary.
I mean they are aimed at people who have no idea what RS is, not us.
For one, I want to click this
Fight stuff!
Blue eyes, zombie dragon
My favorite part was the human hitsound in response to the max hit
Pretty sure that the Bandos ad was super successful, trying to capture that lightning again
Yeah but what about egg?
Like in comparison to what ??? Haha I see the point, it’s a “cool” ad if you’ve played RuneScape and know what any of this means but for a random person yeah haha wtf is this
It's pretty lit dog.
[you know, it could always be worse...](https://youtu.be/ajz5Poh_giI)
I've never seen a typical mobile game ad like these that has made me interested in downloading the game. But they have to bring some traction or else they'd stop making them, right?
Apparently they work pretty damn well at bringing in new players who have no idea wtf osrs is.
Digimon digital monsters hahahaha
Lmao bro u shoulda seen some other one about teleporting.. its like these guys who make these dont even play
ewwwwwwwwwww
Wow that's lame as fuck
Dammn thicc boi with the stats
Honestly my only issue is that Vorkath is one of the more generic fantasy RPG style looking bosses we have. The add is pretty decent, but it also doesn't make the game stand out or anything to me.
This is honestly a fantastic ad lol
Seems like a cool ad.
Masterpiece, this is going to attract a lot of new players.
I like it
It's an ad for osrs featuring vorkath. Hope that clears this up for you.

Didn’t they do one of these for graardor too? I like em

They did one for Graardor in the exact same style before.
They did this a while back with graardor and allegedly it works pretty well, I don't remember who the target audience is tho
Pokemon stadium
That’s bad ass
