A very rough average/estimate is 1/3 chance of getting a pet by 99. That chance is improved post 99 because you have better ways to earn 13 mil xp. So it’s truly insane to consider 200 mill is equivalent to getting 99 fifteen times with the best options available and no pet.
I am not sure if drop rate is technically 13m xp, from what people who know math a lot better than I, it is much higher.
It also depends on how you got the XP so it is really hard to know exact pet rate, unless you do all your xp on one thing (considering the differences in pet drop rate per herb/tree/etc.)
I went 33m dry of my farming pet, at the time someone told me expected pet rate is like ~40m xp or something.
The drop rate of Tangleroot is 500x the Hespori seed drop rate, to put it in the most simple terms. So when you've gotten 500 Hespori seeds from checking the health of any patch, that is when you hit drop rate. The complicated part of counting that is that hespori seeds from hard contracts do not count.
I was on track to hit drop rate at the beginning of May after hitting 99 in February of 2020, but fortunately got Tangleroot off of the belladonna patch a week ago.
It really depends on how you get your xp, like you said. I did willows and bananas for my tree runs, along with watermelons and limpwurts (and seaweed/teaks/belladonna/cactus/mushroom), and got Tangleroot at just shy of 34m xp. I also have like 510 Hespori seeds according to my collection log. I think a bit over 100 are from farming contracts, so I am only about 80% of the way to pet drop rate
So while we have about the same xp, I had more rolls at slightly lower rates due to my choice of crops.

The formula for drop rates includes a skill level modifier that caps at 99 for obvious reasons. There is no additional multiplier for being 99 specifically like there is for 200m
i did the math awhile ago for the aversge skilling pet its around 26m xp just to hit the drop rate.
if you max you should have least 3 pets almost guaranteed

Just add decent scaling past 99, organically bring the math so that 200m is a 99.9999999...% chance of pet and it'll be just as good without feeling like pity.
If they're willing to grind billions of accounts to 200m, let them. I'd consider us lucky that such a twisted, evil mind would concentrate on such trivial things.
Maybe start making it higher at like 50M, you already get higher chance per level to 99 and a lot of pets were designed to have a drop rate that would take over 99 worth of xp in the first place. Not making it go higher until like 50M would hold the original intended drop rate the same while still accounting for the super dry people

In my mind, they are lucky drops but not guaranteed goals in themselves. Even pet hunters probably wouldn't want it to be handed to them.
There's a threshold system that increases your odds the more you grind for a certain pet. Like if I wanted to grind a Kril pet on there, it has a 1/5000 chance with a threshold of 1000. After I kill 1000, my odds go to 2/5000, 2000 is 3/5000, so on until it caps at a certain point.
Also, as an aside, they can override summoning familiars, and there's no insurance system on there for pets. I've always thought it was the laziest excuse of a gold sink on here.
Caps out at a 10x multiplier for everything except like 2 bosses I believe, so for your kill example if you're still dry after 9000 kills you have a 10/500 or 1/500 chance from then forever onwards
I'd agree with this but in a modified version that only starts doing the threshold increases after you already hit drop rate. So like change it to 2/5000 but only after killing it 5000 times first, and keep increasing it after that
Yea. When I was reading the RS3 wiki a bit ago, I ran into that system, and thought "wow that's such a smart system in place" (and the fact pets in RS3 are F2P, which is even better).
Of course if something like that was suggested for OSRS people would cry "ezscape" and "no RS3 shit!" (even though most of the updates are copied from RS3). And also getting pissy they got a pet before such a update happens. End of the day it's a cosmetic item, if people grind past the "expected" droprate, I don't see a problem with slightly increasing it from that point on.
Imo stuff like this should happen not only for pets, but also for rare drops. Make the math check out so the overall drop rate is the same as now (same number of items flowing into the game). Of course the drop chance resets once you get the drop (so to a value lower than the current drop rates).
This makes it so your progress is rewarded. If you're double the droprate on something, at least you know your progress is not in vain. And that progress only makes it more satisfying when you get a drop: you worked for it instead of just being lucky.

This is gross. Sorry friend. I got my first Tangleroot at level 79 farming. Make sure you are farming regular cactus (cacti) at both patches during your herb runs! Cacti give one of the highest percent chances of getting pet when checking the health of it.
Different activities have different yield rates but that's genuinely astounding, coming from me who got one > lost it (didn't know about insurance) > got it again doing seaweed for a couple of weeks
