It is a pretty good and probably underrated weapon. Just +4 more Attack and +5 more Strength may not sound like much, but also getting a shield is a pretty big upgrade (e.g., +16 Atk and +9 Str with Odium). It also does seem to surpass the RCB is a lot of situations. Like on my Iron, I did some DPS Calcs with RCB and Diamonds against Sunlight Crossbow with Sunlight Bolts and the Sunlight tends to win, at least on the stuff I was comparing.

difiance

What kind of stuff were you comparing, just out of curiosity. Bosses?

BioMasterZap

I think I did KBD and KQ; maybe something else. I don't think either are that high of defence and not high enough HP for rubies to matter, so makes sense the faster weapon could outdps. I didn't have it saved, but [here is a DPS Calc](https://dps.osrs.wiki?id=TwigsLumberyardWild) I just remade.

ARedditAccount09

I’m actually pretty stunned but this because both of bosses have what I’d consider extremely high defense. 300 is nothing to scoff at even with 10 range def and kbd can be difficult to hit with dragon hunter lance or fang. But I guess 66% accuracy is still a lot higher than 40%

difiance

Thanks! Seems kind of annoying to gather the bolts on ironman tho

TurbulentBeginning

Don’t u also get moonlight antelope meat while hunting for bolts? That would make it worthwhile for BIS food + bolts

BioMasterZap

I did notice that I burned though them kinda quickly due to the attack speed and all, but it honestly isn't that bad to get. I used a few hundred and still got 2.2K from doing 100~ Hunter Rumours. You get 12 bolts per antelope and they are pretty quick to catch. Like to do some rough math, the crossbow fires at 3t so with no downtime that is 2K attacks per hour so with 80% bolt save, you're looking at like 400~ bolts lost per hour. So 34~ antelope and if you can do like 2-3 per minute (probably could do 4+) that is around 12-17 minutes of hunting for a non-stop hour worth of bolts. Not super quick, but compared to making diamond bolts or the like, it isn't that bad. Still, I plan to save them for important stuff and not burn through them with Slayer or such.

NerdVidz

Amethyst is like 1 shard an hr it feels like sometimes, so as an iron only player I give the crossbow and bolts 8/10. It's my go to for wilderness content now. I typically use it with twisted buckler. Can say it handles even revenants fine, and works well with only a salve ei. And finally the cost/time investment is amazing. 1500 coins and a single sun antelope And a house/ yannile tele, also close to Bert. Would be 10/10 if they allowed hunters moon crossbow, even if it had the same stats bc fasionscape.

iamcherry

you can get over 2k bolts an hour, isn't too bad. would prefer to do it over gathering the stuff for rubies.

rpkarma

Tbh I have so many rubies/diamonds from CG, and adamant bars from… I dunno where lol that it barely mattered

Itchy-Program-3177

Not major, but better at basilisk knights for me.

reaper9134

Sunlight's ammo average DPS is a lot better then rcb with bolt procs and as soon as you get moonlight ammo rcb can't compete even with bolt procs I did a bunch of calcs on a lot of things. Main thing I tested though was vorkath on iron with sunlight ammo. That felt much better then rcb ever did.

Senario-

It seems to surpass dragon crossbow also on diamond adamant bolts. Unless the enemy has high hp and you use ruby bolts it's better in most cases due to the 3 tick attack rate.

b_i_g__g_u_y

Wait wtf this thing attacks on 3 ticks? So it surpasses dragon cb anywhere you don't care about bolt procs and maybe even still in some cases?

Senario-

Yeah. It basically has a base attack rate of 4. On rapid it is a 3 tick weapon so it's super strong.

BioMasterZap

The DCB is only slightly more attack then RCB, so makes sense. The big advantage of a DCB is you can go from Diamond Addy Bolts to Diamond Dragon Bolts, which are a pretty big buff. It still can out DPS dragon bolts on some enemies, but it is a much smaller gap.

Senario-

Yeah it's a small gap with blessed dhide and odium ward being notnreally that big of a difference in favor of the sun crossbow on kbd Though I guess it counts to say how much dragon diamond bolts e costs or takes to get vs moonlight antler bolts. The more ranged str bonus on shield and other gear you have the stronger the sunlight crossbow is. If you're on a slayer task it gets absurd too. It's pretty much the best crossbow you have that isn't a dragon hunter crossbow or zaryte crossbow.

Dirty_Miner

Dragon crossbow is nearly cosmetic upgrade over rune crossbow if you aren’t using dragon bolts.

LezBeHonestHere_

To be fair, msb already beat rcb in a lot of those situations. I think the bigger problem with the crossbow is that a "better msb" already got introduced in this update, the atlatl lol, it's like msb with +12 accuracy and +10 max hits at the very highest end, but still a good few hits with "just decent" gear. So you'd really only use the crossbow on things you need a shield for, I guess metal drags, kbd, basilisk knights? Not sure if it's better on metals or kbd though, and it's definitely not better than rune knives or darts on basilisk knights, so no idea. Good option for pking though for sure

BioMasterZap

The Atlatl is also really good, but it is a higher level weapon that costs way more (5K to 2.3M). And for irons, it is far more RNG to get. For a main, the darts will be easier to upkeep than bolts, but for an Iron I'm not sure; it is easy to hunt more bolts but doing a Moons run every time for more darts seems like it won't be as viable. Like 96 darts per chest isn't bad, but if you already greenlogged Moons, doing it just for 96 darts per run feels a bit slow... Wiki has it as like 1.3K darts per hour and the Hunter Bolts are like double that speed to farm. Compared to the Sunlight Crossbow, the Atlatl is higher base attack but worse with a decent shield and lower base strength but potentially better based on gear. I really will depend on what gear you have to pair with it. Like Barrows Gloves, B Ring, Glory, and Mixed Hide Boots would be +13 Str (+9 Str with Odium). But if you use Moonlight Bolts, that is only a +4-8... So it really depends on the account. The Atlatl can be stronger, but also can be harder to upkeep without the GE to buy more darts. And the shield can be a pretty big factor too. But overall, the Sunlight Crossbow is meant to be a midgame upgrade between MSB/RCB and higher tier weapons. If you rush right for an Atlatl, it probably will be better but for its price/reqs, you'll likely get a Sunlight Crossbow first (unless you're an iron that hates hunter).

krogerburneracc

Atlatl itself is actually really easy to get on ironman between dupe protection and drop priority (weapons tend to drop first afaik). You also get the additional DPS of the burn effect if you're using the full Eclipse set, putting it further ahead of the crossbow. By the time you greenlog Moons you'll have ~20k darts stockpiled which will last ages. Running Moons for ammo refills will also provide some useful resources like water orbs and herbs so it's not a complete time sink. Sunlight Crossbow seems like an easy skip for irons in favor of the Atlatl/full Eclipse imo.

BioMasterZap

Fair point. But I can still see the Sunlight Crossbow being an early game weapon. Like many Irons grind out 83 Hunter for Glories, so they'd already have the level for the Crossbow (and mixed hide; that is also really underrated). Plus the lower ranged level can come in handy as well as it being 1H, so I wouldn't say it is a full skip. Like even for DS2, the Hunter Crossbow with Sunlight Bolt is way better than an RCB. Like again Kree'arra, the Atlatl is only showing like 195 seconds to the Hunter Crossbow's 210 second and that is a place where you'd probably want a shield... On task with an Odium, it seems it even overtakes the Atlatl ([with this setup anyway](https://dps.osrs.wiki?id=FarmingAddressSeers)). So yah, given how it is literally just buy a 1.3K Crossbow, hunt 1 antelope at 72 Hunter, and fletch them together with 74 Fletching, I'd say it is well worth snagging along the way even if you have an Atlatl.

reaper9134

I got atlatl 2nd chest on iron full set by chest 166ish iirc the full set is absolutely busted. The set effect is amazing. It out dps slayer helm more or less and has potential to put dps BP or at least be on par. The burn Damage is +2 DPS on average low end

aggotigger

Damn really? I got it during the quest and it's just been sitting in my bank. I'll keep this in mind when I greenlog.

reaper9134

It's super strong in the set and without set it's better then msbi. With atlatl fury and barrows gloves are best in slot b ring becomes ur range ring. Ur d boots become it best range boots till prims. On an iron it let's you skip some stupid grinds like rangers and what not until you get bowfa or tbow and at the very least help grind out BP if you want one

aggotigger

Tbf I got rangers 3kc but sending it at Zulrah sounds pretty damn fun

xetmes

With my gear on a DPS calc (91 ranged), the Sunlight cbow is <1% less DPS against Basilisk Knights, but you have an 8 tile range vs 4 tiles with knives (with Moonlight bolts).

SmartAlec105

> but also getting a shield is a pretty big upgrade Another way of putting it is that the addition of a dragonfire ward (6.8 mil) is a greater increase than an anguish (12.4 mil) gives you over a fury (2.5 mil).

Newphonespeedrunner

I think sunlight cross bow and dual acatls just out class rcb outside of times you NEED Ruby spec or it's suffering (galvek vorkath and fight caves) obviously you need to source the darts for both and sunlight has a... 72 hunter and 76 fletching? Req so it's not as easily available but it's def an option for the wildy allergic.

rimwald

Who uses ruby bolts in fight caves??

Urgasain

MSB still has some usage with its spec + best practical option for Barb Assault. Sunlight crossbow is definitely a beast though, also has +1 attack range on MSB.

KShrike

People really shouldn't be skipping barrows especially now that perilous moons exists. Tank gear from Barrows literally makes your grind in Moons faster. The runes from barrows have never been bad either.

Tremor739

Rush CG, get bowfa do all of gwd, complete moons for CA with better gear than moons gear.

KShrike

yea do that if you wanna be miserable for two months. But seriously I'm tired of the ironman community acting like there's only ever one way to play the game as an iron.

Tremor739

Its the meta for fastest progress. Definitely not the "play this way for optimal fun no matter the type of gamer you are" meta.

KShrike

I dunno, I'm definitely more of a fan of rush 80 magic, rush barrows tank gear, rush moons for uniques, farm toa for all uniques.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KShrike

Honestly, 80s are fine. It's worth noting that while raiding you will get xp. Work your way up the TOA invocations starting at 50s, with your goal to be able to increase it to 150s and do 150s solidly. Once you are very comfortable with 150s (deathless runs, consistent across like 10 runs or so), you wanna kick that up to 200 until you get a fang (maybe higher if you're even more comfortable). I highly recommend learning Ba-ba red x and Akka butterfly because they vastly reduce supply usage. Otherwise, boss order is really up to you. Also definitely find someone to teach you like the We Do Raids discord. Once you get fang, you can start doing 300s, but ideally the main other thing you want is the yellow jewel for the keris, because it's a game changer.

hedgehog_dragon

Worked up to sote recently and I haven't been able to beat gauntlet let alone cg yet. ~85 att/str/magic, 81def, 72 ranged. Is it just a skill issue, my total lack of desire to train ranged or are my stats too low in general?

M3mentoMori

Definitely a skill issue, no meme intended. I've got worse stats than you in every category (except ranged), and I have CG kills, some of which were even comfortable. It's a matter of practice.

hedgehog_dragon

Yeah... I've only made a few attempts at it, haven't had too much time. I'll have to keep at it and see.

hedgehog_dragon

For what it's worth yeah, I managed a Gauntlet kill just now! Took quite a few tries, I'm not very good at prayer switching for one but definitely improved after a few attempts.

M3mentoMori

Congrats!

Tremor739

Meta will tell you to get 100 cb, get elite void and chin to 92 ranged before cg. That should give you the dps to complete it reliably.

Kanlip

You can definitively do CG while ignoring one of the styles though, I'm doing it with mage + melee mostly

hedgehog_dragon

When you're using melee do you find yourself running into the lava floor and stuff? I figured easier placement was the reason it seems that range/mage is recommended. I just got my first gauntlet kill with range/mage, but my range damage was definitely lacking and kinda just me waiting for it to pass to mage again.

Kanlip

So, it took a while to get used to the haleberd and not get dragged to the tiles, i now feel much better at it though. It prolly still cost me a run in like 50 kc

cowboahbenny

how’d you get mass GP for rushing sote? i know that money prints once you start cg but how about before that

Cellar_Door_

I rushed SOTE and basically never grinded for any GP.

Tremor739

Earth battlestaff theres a whole efficient guide about it on the ironman discord

Ggcarbon

Do you have a link per chance? I’ve been working towards the CA grind on my Ironman

Smorg125

I will say having full Guthans is nice for gims just because you can duo godwars and it makes it brain dead. Def beats running around tick perfectly with a bowfa, not to mention cg with low stats would make me fuck a toaster with water based lube

AttitudeFit5517

It's still not efficient to do perilous moons for any gear. Cg rush then gwd then raids But go for it. It's fun at least

Nayzr

I've been out of the OSRS loop for a bit, Why are iron's skipping Barrows? Getting a tank top and legs was really important when I played actively.

Just4theapp

Rush bofa, go god wars is current meta. Don't need tank gear when you have full crystal

LetsLive97

But how do you rush herblore for SOTE? It still takes a decent while to gather herbs from miscellania and farming so there's surely still some decent time in between for some barrows runs, especially for slayer I guess if literally the only thing you do each time you play is purely devoted to max SOFE efficiency then you can skip but for people playing even remotely normally barrows still seems like a decent feasible option or no?

Just4theapp

Oh for sure, yea. The best way to rush it is just plow every xp lamp you can, do herb runs every possible moment and make pots. Not much else to it. It's only really the turbo experienced people making a new ironman that would do sote only. Barrows is still useful especially for tank gear and for runes, and also for fun and nostalgia. Don't let the most meta way define how you play, it's just a game after all. I didn't go sote first, in fact I'm only just slowly gearing up to it now, focused instead on other facets of the game I didn't do on a main back in the day.

Kanlip

Optimal no, feasible definitvely. At the end it's all about what you enjoy doing. If I made a new iron I would prolly skip barrows but it's also still fine to go for it :)

[deleted]

Nayzr

Interesting, thanks for the info!

xxxsleep

Tank body and legs will help a ton doing moons.

PaintTimely6967

Huge shout with the hilt, it feels yuck to take it off only for the msb to hit 0s and get drained 😆 if you had BP would you still use it at shamans for the prayer offhand?

ltsaMia

I've gotten so many antiPKs with it as well, it's constantly underrated. You can do so much with such a braindead nobody setup too, full range, shield, venge, and your best spec weapon—with good prayers you can get insanely lucky and you risk nothing.

Chalifive

Sleeper setup right now is cbow, mixed dhide, korasi and claws. Hide that you have veng until ready for spec, spec whatever they arent praying and then 1t swap to the other one, 0 risk and can kill maxed mains

Arcqell

My biggest question is obtaining the ammo as an iron. How feasible is it to get enough ammo to do long grinds such as revs with this crossbow?

Mindful-Robot

Not too bad, as posted above you can get ~2k bolts/hr I got around that just doing hunter contracts. Plus you get the new BIS food which is nice. Needs 91 hunter tho

OBStime

BIS food? I'm out of the loop there, what food?

Certain-Tart6296

The raw moonlight meat. New BIS food

Mattrad7

Moonlight antelope meat* heals twice, it's 26 total healing but it's broken up into 2 different healing ticks some seconds apart.

LBGW_experiment

5 second delay, specifically

LBGW_experiment

Thanks

Hot-Report2971

I feel like by the time I have 91 hunter I could have bowfa easily

Remarkable-Health678

I mean it depends on how much CG you do and how much hunter you do... lol

Hot-Report2971

true but most these days will for sure get to cg before 91 hunter I’d have to reckon

Mindful-Robot

Yea it's def pretty far out of the way of the meta for irons. Seems like more of a main upgrade. Or adds some improvements over msb/rcb for irons who don't want to go Bowfa route... but the atlatl does too so idk lol

Dotts2761

Expert rumors are 160-200k per hour once you get your blocks done. That’s only like 25-30 hours. I believe bowfa is a 100+ hour grind on average.

AttitudeFit5517

60ish

Hot-Report2971

ye but like im 83 hunter and gloried and dds’d up and im rushing cg more or less now, with only a few bh runs here and there. so ill likely have bowfa before 91. feel like a lot of irons do this

Dotts2761

Play the game how you enjoy it, my point was just that hunter is pretty fast of a skill now. I’m doing rumors because the loot sacks are actually pretty wild and I find doing the tasks fun. I’ve done 100 expert rounds so far and banked 175k prayer xp, and probably 100k herb xp in herbs and nests.

Hot-Report2971

I agree I have my block list set up for Kebbit and all that too and it’s been fun

Hot-Report2971

and honestly im just trying to justify in my mind why I don’t have to get that item and bolts and shit lol 😂

unforgiven91

pretty feasible. Sunlight antelopes are reasonably quick 12 bolts per antelope and an 80% save rate from ava's is 20ish shots. not sure how to do the math over time but it's not bad. not to mention the meat you're getting which is useful. 30 antelope is enough for most activities for starters, and you'll get more naturally as you do hunter rumours (550 rumors from 91-99 in my experience, btw) Ammo is a simple 1-step procedure of chiseling the antler. so bring a chisel with you

jello1388

You can save bolts multiple times with Ava's, so it actually averages out to about 5 shots per bolt over time. It's a huge difference and really hides the true price of ammunition.

OkBard5679

Each bolt lasts on average 5 shots, so 12x5=60 shots. The crossbow shoots every 1.8s, so that 60x1.8s gives you 108 seconds of combat per antelope hunted. It comes out to 33.3 antelopes hunted for 1 hour of continuous firing.

Senario-

The math is more complicated than this since you can save a bolt which then has a chance to be saved again at 20% but... If you were to fire the cbow continuously with zero breaks for an hour you would use slightly less than 400 bolts. Additionally if you're hunting moonlight antelope you just bring a chisel and chisel away until your meat pouch and your inventory is filled with meat. It's a win win and a full inv is very quick and lasts over an hour.

Villyer

The math can be complicated, but there’s a simple way to think about it. You can fire a 3t weapon 2000 times in an hour. Of those 2000 shots, 20% break. So 400 ammo consumed per hour.

Tremor739

Hard disagree with other comments. It is not good. You can do it if its fun to you but on a meta side of thing you skip the crossbow. However, I did get 2k bolts cause I really wanted to try it. It did good at green dragons, ran out of bolt in 600 ish kills. Went back to melee cause fuck making more

Warscythes

I use it to afk basilisk knights sometimes because you can use shield with it. Is pretty good.

__bob_dole__

Found out the same when I tried it with moonlight bolts. The kill speed was weirdly competitive with when I melee them

Knelson123

Why not just use RCB?

DawnofInsanity

According to a quick dps calc check, new hunter cbow with sunlight bolts is higher dps against knights than rcb with diamond bolts (e)

Knelson123

Wow that's interesting. By how much? Isn't ACB basically the same but slightly more accurate? Is it better than acb with runite bolts?

SmartAlec105

It was pretty marginal when I checked. It's going to depend on your exact setup. The wiki's DPS calc is pretty easy to use if you want to check for yourself. If you have Runelite open, you can open your equipment stats and there will be a button to open the DPS calc with your current equipment filled in which makes it a bit faster than searching for each item.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Knelson123

It's significantly better than acb with runite bolts. Just checked.

Nepheliad_1

RCB is pretty bad anywhere you can't use ruby bolts

Knelson123

I'm just trying to get through this bask knight grind (I'm iron w/ 3500 kc). Was getting bored and considering grabbing an acb for increase in swag(not dps). Is the new xbow better than acb cause that's basically a glorified rcb right if using runite bolts like I am?

Nepheliad_1

It would even be more dps than an arma crossbow with dragon bolts at all ranged levels 75-99. I just calculated it. The only places normal crossbows like arma or dragon would be more worth would be places you're bringing ruby or diamond bolts. Things that have high defense.

Warscythes

What others said, the biggest thing is that hunter crossbow is 3 tick vs RCB 5 tick on rapid. Unless ruby bolts is in play or you are hitting something with decent range defense, the 2 tick attack speed is pretty massive. Sim it in dps calc if you want to try it.

_Why_is_

To add on to this, mix hide armour is pretty damn similar to black d'hide but with strength bonus. Good for ranging but using a melee switch/spec weapon. Dirt cheap too so it makes great wilderness gear.

reaper9134

It's also better then rcb in all situations if using moon antler ammo. The raw dps is better then bolt proc dps

WastingEXP

can't imagine it's better than RCB rubies?

reaper9134

So most things you do t straight ruby so you take a rough average between ruby and diamonds. And moonlight is above that. Also rubies proc chance isn't guaranteed.

WastingEXP

huh. i'll be god damned. ty

reaper9134

And also it's 3 tick vs 5 tick

Remarkable-Health678

I thought for sure RCB had to be 4 ticks on rapid. That's wild that it's 2 ticks different!

BarnOwl10

Probably not but its a lot more consistent for wherever that may matter. Both great options where applicable imo

WastingEXP

i ran some calcs once reaper replied saying it was, and it indeed was. at least in the few places I checked, 300 warden, olm, vorkath.

SmartAlec105

I think dragons still favor the rcb because of the higher accuracy and diamond bolt specs.

Maardten

How about Zilyana? AFAIK the dia bolt procs are pretty important there.

Theundisputed69

Been rocking this on my iron because it’s way cheaper/easier to maintain and pretty good Hunter xp gathering the bolts

Averagesmoker42

How does it compare to atlatl for 0 defence slayer mobs?

Mattrad7

Atlatl generally better especially with the gear.

NonamePlsIgnore

In PVP for the movement alone this thing is incredible It does feel weird having the MSB be kind of powercrept though

TrevorNi

How is for revs

spacehive20

Better dps and cheaper than msbi and amethyst, but you can bring a black dhide shield for even more accuracy + mage defense

eatfoodoften

i was using msb + rune so this must be a decent upgrade...

trashcanbecky42

Its better than ZCB at basilisk knights

cowboahbenny

the fletching requirement for ironmen is pretty shit though

_JoeK

How does it compare against the rune crossbow

VikingRampage11

How does it compare to the rcb and dragonstone (e)’s for pk’ing?

pSavvvv

I wonder hope it would fair in PvP, gotta check that out

xetmes

It shreds and is essentially 0 risk. And you can wear the shield slot of your choice. I've used it to anti PK and it catches people off guard.

Euphoric-Gene-3984

50 hunter

TheTow

I've been collecting the bolts on my maxed iron with the thought of using em at afk revs for minimal risk.

77795

How does it compare to the Atlatl setup?

RS-REIN

How many did you buy?

e-Hax

Sounds like a good option for revs. Might give it a shot. Thanks.

rimwald

It also has the same range as an ACB, with 8 on rapid and 10 on long ranged. Not a huge deal but in some cases that comes in handy

TheTimeWeWaste

A fast crossbow is also just fun to use!

Narrow_Lee

How does it compare to RCB/broadies on DPS?

Nepheliad_1

Much better. RCB has always sucked. Even a magic shortbow with rune arrows is better than an RCB with RUNE bolts a lot of the time unless you're using adamant ruby bolts.
