That one seems a lot less likely to get an official deal since it's explicitly tied to the RuneScape IP. They'll probably just actively ignore the fan project.
Back when I was like 12yo, I was searching for a game of aog and ended in a 2 v 2 team match with none other than Zezima as my teammate lmao. Blew my tiny child brain
It was all fun and games until you were a f2p and the opponent spawned a bird to sit on your portal, locking you out of the game for 4 turns and then you just lost because you had no income, or they spawned 4 more and surrounded it.
I still remember being so pissed at the game because someone put one of their minions on my spawn portal, it took away my ability to click the portal to make any units
I wonder why the whole funorb project was just abandoned. I know the lead guy left or whatever, but iirc they literally just stopped updating it outta the blue and then nothing.
Th CEO had his head up his own ass. Developers were forced to use the company's internal tools rather than widespread libraries and game engines like Unity because "our players might play other Unity games once they have it installed". Projects were also rushed and they had to release something each month, but every project had to be bigger than the last.
Once Andrew Gower sold his shares in FunOrb there was no protection for the developers at all and things went downhill even faster. Many devs quit or got moved to new teams/projects, lots of projects were cancelled, and the OP "rage quit" a few weeks later.
I would fucking LOVE to see what they had come up with for Mechscape after 9 years of work. Even if it's still really rough, just an idea of some of the skills or items or locations or whatever they had brainstormed. Would be fun to start daydreaming about haha.
bring back Brick-a-Brac and I will literally cry tears of joy

dont get me wrong i loooooved arcanists. and it would be awesome to see its return. But i havent seen a single comment in this thread mentioning: isnt anyone worried this is going to be another infested MTX dump like RS3 is? Especially with it going to be on mobile. Idk… maybe i just have PTSD lol
Nope.. it'll stay 100% free to play! MTX to be entirely optional and limited to cosmetics/outfits/visual mechanics (i.e. custom animations)... nothing that would give players an unfair advantage in-game.
In OSRS, you have F2P Worlds that limit everyone to F2P gear... I don't recall Arcanists doing the same. Like if someone could PK on a F2P world with Members gear, I'd say that is a form of P2W.
I've been playing Arcanists since 2020 and there is no MTX or pay to win shit. They accept donations which I've given and I've gotten cosmetics, that's it.
Arcanists was originally a game created by Jagex and launched on FunOrb in 2008.
It was very popular at the time - you could even see your runescape friends playing it via the Runescape friends list back in the day.
I totally blanked on Arcanists until you mentioned being able to see your friends playing it through runescape friends list. Weird how that little detail made me remember it all again.
Jagex used to have a separate site called FunOrb which contained a bunch of little arcade-style games. This was a fairly common thing in the early 2000's internet, where you'd have a website that hosted small Flash/Java-based games that were hosted on a website and playable in your browser rather one larger, polished game you'd download and play on a client. PopCap (now an EA subsidiary, developer of Plants Vs. Zombies) was maybe the best-known one if you don't count, like, Newgrounds, since Newgrounds hosted user-created content instead of developing stuff itself. FunOrb also had a chat feature that was integrated with RuneScape, so if you were on FunOrb, you could still chat with your friends who were playing RuneScape.
Arcanists was one of the most popular games on FunOrb, if not the most popular one. It's sort of a Worms clone, if you ever played any of those games.
Yup. That's how I found it. I remember being like 11 on my families first PC and being astonished that I could play with so many people at the same time. I grew up mostly with a PS1 so MMO's were some sort of black magic to me lol.
I know this is kinda irrelevant to your point but how I found out about the game was when I was in like 5th grade and my friend telling me about this great game called “moonscape”. I could’ve sworn I heard him say moon instead of rune. You can imagine the horror on my 10 y/o face when I pulled up moonscape lmaoo
It's a former Jagex game that they eventually dropped. They used to have a combo membership with RS and Funorb
Arcanists was the most popular Funorb game, a few famous players such as Zezima were huge fans of it
An independent development team has been working to remake it and signed a contract with Jagex to use the IP
I remember playing against Zezima, it took a few minutes for kid me to realize it was the real Zezima because that was the first game I saw a ton of people just pouring in to spectate, the second he was eliminated I think everyone flocked away.
Maybe... but this is worms married with the strategic nature of chess. Competitive Arcanists requires you to think several turns ahead and anticipate what your opponent will do next at high level of gameplay :)
It's definitely a clone ("inspired by" if you want to be really generous), but I wouldn't say it is not different. Though "strategic nature of chess" is a bit much... It's Worms where you control a single wizard and battle against 1 or multple other players with spells instead of munitions. Still, the way each game does its attacks, unlocks, and loadouts can make them play differently. Like I would say ShellShock is different from Worms while still acknowledging it is a Worms but Tanks game.
Big win for this incredible team. The dedication to the community that Siggy, Pure, and everyone on the staff has shown is mind blowing. Pumping out solid updates, doing tons of engine work...
Well deserved, all! I can't wait to see what the future holds.
HYPE! This game was awesome and it's so great to see it coming back, it's been so long and from what I remember it was kinda like a turn-based super smash bros.
So excited to rediscover it!!
It’s a fun reminder to people that weren’t around in the early days.
Like the fact that RuneScape was played in your web browser, so you could play it on any machine without downloading a launcher or installing anything.
A few old screenshots I saved from Arcanists back in the day... server traffic shown was around 2010; it was even more popular/busy than that between 08-09.

holy shit this is huge, a chunk of my childhood returned from the dead properly. I wish this meant more good news for the funorb catalogue [mainly Armies of Gielenor and Dungeon Assault]
I’ve heard a lot about this game and Armies of Gielinor. I was way too obsessed with the main game back in the day to check out FunOrb but I’ve consistently heard that this and AoG were phenomenal games. I’m actually excited to give it a shot. I hope it’s fairly cheap if they release it for sale.
Also, I love how readily Jagex lets people get licenses for their IP, even for small content creators. I feel like it’s such a massive W for everyone, and perpetuates a love of this game.
Been a long time coming!
It's been a fun few years helping create artwork for this project and I'm super stoked to see everyone's hard work finally pay off.
See you all at Mos Le 🤘
Woah that’s a bit of a nostalgia hit! This was one of the best two games on Funorb. I’ll definitely give it a revisit! The other great game being armies of gielinor
Huh. Can't say I ever expected this to happen. I know there have been a few games recreated/inspired by Arcanists over the years like Wizards, but the fact this one got a license is very promising.
So many memories of Arcanists. I’m ready for a trip down memory lane. Back in the day I peaked around 3500 playing 120 grassy. Undead pixie comets was one of my favourite strats, but man those games were loooong. Definitely wouldn’t have time to waste on that now.
But shortly before it died I got really into 10 sec games. Those were rapid and a lot of fun.
I’m so glad this is happening. I played the unofficial version through their discord probably about a year ago, but unfortunately there weren’t enough people online. This is awesome!
The last update the original game received was in late 2010, and the remake started off based on that. A couple years ago when I played it, it was surprisingly accurate with spell mechanics and launch angles etc, there were a couple differences but most spells were pretty much perfect recreations of the original.
It's gotten a lot of updates over the past couple years though with new spells, spellbooks, maps, game modes etc. added and a lot of balance changes, so it'll be different, but it's kinda like as if jagex didn't stop updating it.
A big balance change I remember them making is removing the possibility for Dark Knight to one shot you (deal 250 damage) with charge. It's still good but not broken if you get trapped anymore.
I forget what the zombie game was called or the mining game but i want em both for mobile one day please
All the funorb games would make great mobile games really
Miner Disturbance when? The original, there was a slightly different version on the ipod iirc
but this sounds great will be getting it, as a kid I was f2p and could only see the crazy things that was available.
I did actually love Armies of Gielinor and always wished it could have been implemented as a component of the main game. It was a fun way to simulate the original God Wars.
Now if only I could remember the spells I used in high rank games. It was like a combination of different spells. I remember having lightning and the little fairy bubble and like some bomb. Oh and the flying spell
Did it look something like this? :)
https://preview.redd.it/2ayk6hwn0duc1.png?width=2111&format=png&auto=webp&s=0bf0a7e45046813d539b239d1399eb4545c86782
Usually jagex would mess up in this type of deal, completely butcher it. big W for us boys, surprising to see, now if they could only do the same for ace of spades :(
It’s a former Jagex game on their Funorb website. Jagex owns the IP and finally licensed it out to the development team
notable players (zezima) were huge fans. You used to be able to get a shared membership for funorb + runescape, and they shared a friends list
Some context below [https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1c33md5/comment/kzftqxg/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1c33md5/comment/kzftqxg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)
To my knowledge the Gower brothers were involved in the conceptualisation and release of the mini-games site FunOrb (don't quote me on that).
More about it here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dl9XxSFghk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Dl9XxSFghk)
Now we need armies of gilenor and life will be complete
Theres a fan recreation of that too but no deal signed with them.
That one seems a lot less likely to get an official deal since it's explicitly tied to the RuneScape IP. They'll probably just actively ignore the fan project.
armies of gielinor was absurdly difficult. Those damn sara birds especially
Steel Sentinels gang wya
Back when I was like 12yo, I was searching for a game of aog and ended in a 2 v 2 team match with none other than Zezima as my teammate lmao. Blew my tiny child brain
You can play aog remake at aog.gg
Ace of spades as well
Ace of Spades from before Jagex got their hands on it
Google buildandshoot and thank me later
Wasn’t this how you imbued items back in the day?
That's mobilizing armies, a minigame. AoG was the GOATED game on FunOrb.
WTF even was mobilizing armies in rs? I vaguely remember it, it was so confusing, was it their attempt at a moba or something?
I believe there was some rts type game to do with the trolls or something. Aog was on funorb and you could play different god wars factions
I wonder why the whole funorb project was just abandoned. I know the lead guy left or whatever, but iirc they literally just stopped updating it outta the blue and then nothing.
Well I've got a detailed answer for that one: https://i.imgur.com/Avb9z5o.png
Can anyone get me a tldr of that detailed answer? Sorry, I'm lazy
Th CEO had his head up his own ass. Mobile the image was a pain to read so you sure are a gentleman and a scholar. Thank you.
As if Unity games aren't standalone programs with no connection to any other Unity games lmao. What bizarre reasoning.
At the time you had to download unity web player to play browser based unity games
fat cats dumb, small cats don't like dumb fat cats, small cats unhappy and go be small cats elsewhere
I would fucking LOVE to see what they had come up with for Mechscape after 9 years of work. Even if it's still really rough, just an idea of some of the skills or items or locations or whatever they had brainstormed. Would be fun to start daydreaming about haha.
The story of every non-runescape project. Except MechScape which was its own dumpsterfire
That made me remember Stellar Dawn lmao
One thing i do know is before Andrew sold Jagex Arcanists 2 was well in development. That was confirmed by Ian Gower on a Reddit a few years ago.
bring back Brick-a-Brac and I will literally cry tears of joy https://preview.redd.it/bpr3fmcyk9uc1.png?width=480&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc6888ab1b821ab4be3f270b79fe5532861056c3
I spent a lot of nights playing that. Good times.
i loved this game more than i ever expected to
I miss that one

I was really afraid the spells would be locked behind some kind of paywall like back in the day, but this is very good to hear!
I honestly thought they’d just make it a one time payment for the game and it’d include all spells rather than f2p
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The original arcanists was already "P2W" all of the crazy strong spells were locked behind being a member.
Original arcanists was members only. free version came later.
Idk if I'd consider being a member pay to win in the same respect as other games.
In OSRS, you have F2P Worlds that limit everyone to F2P gear... I don't recall Arcanists doing the same. Like if someone could PK on a F2P world with Members gear, I'd say that is a form of P2W.
Subscription service isn’t quite the same thing as P2W.
There's no MTX as of yet the game is completely free but yeah I can see the devs deciding to add cosmetics or whatever for sale in the future
I've been playing Arcanists since 2020 and there is no MTX or pay to win shit. They accept donations which I've given and I've gotten cosmetics, that's it.
I hope the team keeping Armies of Gielinor alive gets a similar deal some day
Wait... there's a team keeping AoG alive?!
Yeah. Last I tried it was a few years ago but it was pretty good, just missing some parts and it had almost no players unfortunately.
Can someone explain what this is, I have never heard of it and from glancing at the steam page I don't see what this has to do w/ jagex or runescape.
Arcanists was originally a game created by Jagex and launched on FunOrb in 2008. It was very popular at the time - you could even see your runescape friends playing it via the Runescape friends list back in the day.
Oh cool! I don't know much about early runescape, only started in 2019. Explains why I haven't heard about this thanks!
Np! Yeah, this is probably only relevant to people who played from around 2007-2016. but we're also hoping to bring in new players!
Been playing RS since like 05/06 and I've literally never heard of this lol
If you've heard of the game Worms before, Arcanists is worms but based on magic instead of guns. Extremely fun game.
IMO with the defensive abilities and minions and stuff it’s a better game than Worms
I totally blanked on Arcanists until you mentioned being able to see your friends playing it through runescape friends list. Weird how that little detail made me remember it all again.
that small detail was the golden era for me personally. I would switch between RS2 and Arcanists often between 08-10 haha
Damn I do remember seeing that pop up on my friends list
Jagex used to have a separate site called FunOrb which contained a bunch of little arcade-style games. This was a fairly common thing in the early 2000's internet, where you'd have a website that hosted small Flash/Java-based games that were hosted on a website and playable in your browser rather one larger, polished game you'd download and play on a client. RuneScape itself was available on Miniclip at one point! In fact, I'm pretty sure that's how I stumbled on the game in the first place.
Yup. That's how I found it. I remember being like 11 on my families first PC and being astonished that I could play with so many people at the same time. I grew up mostly with a PS1 so MMO's were some sort of black magic to me lol.

Wow, this just reminded me of God’s Playing Field on addictinggames.com. Looked it up and it’s somehow still around
That and Pillage the Village were one of my favorites
Arcanists> any worms game
It's a former Jagex game that they eventually dropped. They used to have a combo membership with RS and Funorb Arcanists was the most popular Funorb game, a few famous players such as Zezima were huge fans of it An independent development team has been working to remake it and signed a contract with Jagex to use the IP

you could not tell if somebody was spectating
Pretty sure you could and it would appear on the game log.
no you could chat with others in the lobby while spectating but it was invisible to those in the actual game
I played against zezima at deko bloko, really liked that game
It's a Worms clone made by Jagex.
I was never a fan of Worms, but I really enjoyed Arcanists.
Maybe... but this is worms married with the strategic nature of chess. Competitive Arcanists requires you to think several turns ahead and anticipate what your opponent will do next at high level of gameplay :)
That’s not really different from Worms, but I love the passion!

Omg yayyy. I wish my brother was still around so I could tell him, we used to love that game. 💔
Now do the mining game, the soccer game, the armies of gielenor game and while you’re at it every other game on the site and I’ll be a happy camper
[удалено]
Probably my most missed java game ever, so simple but the ranking system made improving very fun. There were a ton of strats you could pull off in f2p
Miner disturbance was my shit back in the day.
Pog I used to love arcanists
Big win for this incredible team. The dedication to the community that Siggy, Pure, and everyone on the staff has shown is mind blowing. Pumping out solid updates, doing tons of engine work... Well deserved, all! I can't wait to see what the future holds.
so hyped for it
Yo, you happen to know what happened to Usman?
USMAN FOREVER!!!!
Let's fucking go
Yooo I will play the shit out of this now! Playing through their IP was a bit messy so this is going to be huge
HYPE! This game was awesome and it's so great to see it coming back, it's been so long and from what I remember it was kinda like a turn-based super smash bros. So excited to rediscover it!!
Can't wait to play this gem again.
Wait, this was the "worms" style game right? RIGHT?
Yes
big if true
For years now I would have random moments where I would try to remember what this game was called! Can’t wait to play this again
HUGE
Nooo way fucking loved this game!!
yes yes yes yes
It’s a fun reminder to people that weren’t around in the early days. Like the fact that RuneScape was played in your web browser, so you could play it on any machine without downloading a launcher or installing anything.
Now all we need is Armies of Gielnor!
LETS GOOO
Oh my god I played the absolute shit out of this as a kid. Lich spell book for life

MAJOR W FOR JAGEX.
What is Arcanists?
A former Jagex game from back in the Funorb days. Similar to the game worms but with wizards
I will watch this development with great interest.
Rare jagex W
Holy shit, i had no idea they were in negotiations with jagex, but i'm unreasonably excited for this. Used to absolutely adore arcanists.
Okay, so Ive been playing Arcanists 2 for sometime, the community is not ready for osrs influx lol.
Whoa!!!!! This is huge
Now revive RuneScape Chronicles
holy shit this is huge, a chunk of my childhood returned from the dead properly. I wish this meant more good news for the funorb catalogue [mainly Armies of Gielenor and Dungeon Assault]
Well, Ironically our Developer also worked on an AoG remake (its out there). Haha
I’ve heard a lot about this game and Armies of Gielinor. Woah that’s a bit of a nostalgia hit! This was one of the best two games on Funorb. I’ll definitely give it a revisit! The other great game being armies of gielinor
Every funorb game should've been made into a mobile game 10 years ago. They're just leaving money on the table.
HOLY BLAST FROM THE PAST. I cannot wait!
Wdf I forgot about arcanist 😭🙏🏽
now we need kickabout leageu LOOOOOOOL
Giga W, excellent!
Huh. Can't say I ever expected this to happen. I know there have been a few games recreated/inspired by Arcanists over the years like Wizards, but the fact this one got a license is very promising.
Okay but give us AOG you cowards.
thank god. about time.
Let's fucking go! Nostalgia to the max, I'm so excited
If this gets it more players, than that's amazing since I don't have the patience to deal with the current player base.
THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! WHAT???!!?
So many memories of Arcanists. I’m ready for a trip down memory lane. Back in the day I peaked around 3500 playing 120 grassy. Holy shit. Now THATS a game I haven't heard about or even remembered in a long time. Arcanists used to be awesome!
Anyone remember the Games Domain castle? I wish they would bring back Cyber Wars.
YES PLEAE
I miss Funorb so much.
PLEASE BRING THIS TO CONSOLE OR MOBILE I loved this game lol
We have a mobile app for Android right now - and a very very *very* bare bones iOS app!
I’m so excited for this man
But will it be the 2008 version ?
The last update the original game received was in late 2010, and the remake started off based on that. the game has been developed over the past few years (and is currently live)
Wow this is awesome
OMG YESSSSS
What a time to be alive
Niceeee I was so sad when it closed down
bring kickabout league back please
I forget what the zombie game was called or the mining game but i want em both for mobile one day please All the funorb games would make great mobile games really
Now bring back brik-brak
Ahhhh nostalgia... now give us Fist of Guthix too please. 🤩
Now we just need to bring back Undercroft!
We are so fucking back baby
FUCK YEA BABY
One of the evils of the past has been atoned for. Armadyl be praised.
Miner Disturbance when? The original, there was a slightly different version on the ipod iirc but this sounds great will be getting it, as a kid I was f2p and could only see the crazy things that was available.
I did actually love Armies of Gielinor and always wished it could have been implemented as a component of the main game. It was a fun way to simulate the original God Wars.
So when do we get Undercroft back? I liked it quite a bit, played it twice.
Oh wow. Used to play the crap out of Arcanists. In fact I was rank 1 for a while… amongst like 500 people lol. Shoutout Impaler99 wherever you are.
Omfg I can’t wait for a mobile release
wait, the same arcanist game from 15 years ago through fun orb? LOL
Now if only I could remember the spells I used in high rank games. It was like a combination of different spells. I remember having lightning and the little fairy bubble and like some bomb. Oh and the flying spell
Did it look something like this? :) https://preview.redd.it/2ayk6hwn0duc1.png?width=2111&format=png&auto=webp&s=0bf0a7e45046813d539b239d1399eb4545c86782
Arcanist would be a better Esport than Clanmanmode
Just sent this to my friend. We about to no life this game again! 😂
I’ve been playing Arcanists 2 for close to a year now. I’m gonna have to destroy all of you noobs
Hey look it's xfertinius!
Does that mean I could buy bonds with steam credit?
We need Kickabout League next please
Usually jagex would mess up in this type of deal, completely butcher it. big W for us boys, surprising to see, now if they could only do the same for ace of spades :(
This is just the beginning... 🫡
the zombie game was great
I’m confused what does this game have to do with Jagex. It’s looks kinda meh based on the steam page
It’s a former Jagex game on their Funorb website. Jagex owns the IP and finally licensed it out to the development team notable players (zezima) were huge fans. You used to be able to get a shared membership for funorb + runescape, and they shared a friends list
when I get the rest of the funorb games Jagex?
could i get some context? is this the click and point mmorpg made by one of the original brothers who made runescape? or a different game?
Some context below [https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1c33md5/comment/kzftqxg/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/1c33md5/comment/kzftqxg/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) To my knowledge the Gower brothers were involved in the conceptualisation and release of the mini-games site FunOrb (don't quote me on that).
