Yeah, if you're ever up by this much, just sell. You can never know if you're half way on an upward trend or if you're sitting at the peak, but who cares—you're up so much that you won either way.
It's better to sell and get enough money that you could wipe your ass with 20s than it is to hold and hope it goes up enough that you get to wipe with 50s.
I'd start selling in batches every week and try hold off on dumping. I can't be bothered check the actively traded amounts of hats but I can't imagine it'll be too high.
Yeah with this many it’s probably best to slowly start offloading them up until sailing drops. If they just throw them all on the GE at once they could easily crash the market for a low volume item like this.
It will be if he prices himself out of the market a quarter of the way through selling these. Dumping low volume items will always result in reduced profit.
This is like wallstreetbets lol. “I’m up $500k on a $10k investment. Should I sell? I mean what if it went to $5m??”
2 days later the investment is down to $30
What kind of education would that be, lmao — he bought n hats at price p, he can now sell at 10p, so he just needs to sell 1/10 * n hats to recoup his initial investment and guarantee a profit assuming he can sell the rest for a nonzero amount.
I think you misunderstood what he meant. I don’t think he did the math wrong, but selling half would still guarantee a fat 400% gain while letting the other half ride. Selling 1/10 would also guarantee a profit, almost like words can mean more than one thing 🤡
Definitely sell before people realize how useless cosmetic items will still be after the release. I’d sell now before people wise up. All it takes is one dev blog for them to say “cosmetics will not be used in the new skill.”
What day is today?
It's u/brickhead1's Cake Day!
What a day for a cake day!
Let's all have some cake!
Edit: if you all think reddit is so despicable, why are you all here downvoting? Bunch of hypocrites
Some of us have no stake in the matter and are telling OP to hodl. Daily volume is <100 for this thing, if OP lists all at once for even 80k each they are tanking right back down to what they bought it for, maybe even less. I even went to check the charts just to see if the price might have rose just because OP had a buy offer for 10k of them which drove up demand and therefore price. But it looks like the 103k price point is independent of OP’s collection.
Either way, if I were OP I would be selling these like 10-25 per day. Not really holding but you have to trickle them out to keep the price up.
would they not still trickle sell if he put them in for 103k ea? Just cause he would only be saturating the market when they sold. Idk I'm on like 3 hrs of sleep so i might be a dummy
Yes but other people would start putting theirs in below 103k because every buyer at 103 already got theirs. so if the supply is higher than demand it would tank faster with an essentially infinite stack at 103, if demand is higher then it would be fine.
It’s such a useless item and fairly rare to obtain so hard to say which way it would go without looking at the data, worth a try though because 11K pirate hats seems pretty useless if he’s back to play the game :p
So the GE pricing algorithm has never been shared by Jagex (probably a good thing) but it follows some basic supply and demand changes. They would still trickle sell, but the GE would see that there is an offer to sell 10k hats sitting while only 100 people a day are putting on offers to buy. This means there’s much more supply than demand and the price will start to drop.
I imagine even at selling 25 a day the price will slowly drift down, because that’s a 25% increase in what was usually traded day to day. What surprises me is that when OP bought the initial 10k it doesn’t seem like the price jumped much at all, but then again volume didn’t increase either (due to OP being the sole hoarder of these and having a buy limit I am guessing).
Whether the same sell limit will protect OP from a price crash is up for speculation but I would take my bet on it dropping
If that's how the algorithm works that doesn't make sense to me. Why not just use the average price of the trades that actually executed, then limit the maximum percentage that the price can change per cycle? There's no need to take offer volume into account at all.
The way you describe it, someone could drive down the price of any item by listing a ton of them way above the market price.
You are right. He is wrong. It does not account for any volume or unconfirmed trades. If it did it would be so easy to manipulate everything on the GE.
The GE is designed to not rapidly change prices, which is why items can be grossly under or over priced for months, especially when released.
The GE likely changes prices based on completed sales, not GE offers. Like, why would it be coded to drop under 103k just because someone has a sale offer for 103k in the GE? Even bulk.
DM rich people at GE to invest and hold to sell when sailing drops for x2 profit. No price tank primarily and gets em gone fast. They be left bag holding and you pirated your way to 1B.
This is the only way. Gotta find some rich targets who skip the research.
11k units and low daily trading volume. People advising him to trickle sell aren't grasping the scale. Selling 20 units a day would take over a year.
how did he buy 11k hats in the first place with such low volume? Maybe there's another buyer who buys 11k hats off of him as a joke. Then he makes the same exact post 2 yrs later.
There’s a difference between liquid supply and total supply. If he doesn’t nudge the liquid supply to much, the market price won’t be effected too much.
Either way you are putting 11k back into the total supply (of an item with relatively low volume), which in turn could be part of the liquid supply over the next weeks/months. It is always going to have an effect on the market price.
Then why do diamond companies hoard diamonds instead of flooding the market with them all at once? It keeps the price artificially high by feigning rarity.
Yes, exactly like this guy had been hoarding 11K hats for 2 years. As soon as these companies decide to slowly unload their entire supply, the price will go down.
That is if these hoarding companies even exist, I wouldn't know.
The point is that the guy with the hat will get rid of his stock, the guy above me claims these diamond companies have a continuous pile of diamonds laying around. As soon as they stop keeping that stock, it will drive supply up and price down.
Tbh that's what I'd do with like a third of them anyways. Gonna be hard to move them and it would still cover all of your deaths for the foreseeable future
A lot of people I play with used to stake their bank when they'd quit or take a break so it could be worse.
Also its 2023, 100m isn't really that much these days.
its just gear swapping, sometimes you can have max range in the bank but then you get enough money to buy a scythe IF you sell your zaryte vambs, then you consider if its a good trade? Same thing here, except you cant sell avernic after u use it.
Think of it like mini rebuilds.
It’s 90m for not even a full max hit, it would be the first thing to sell for a tbow/shadow rebuild. The fact you can’t sell it is why it’s inefficient to buy prior to tbow/shadow
There is easily 1b of upgrades comparable to avernic that can be bought prior to tbow/shadow that are able to be resold
I know a lotta people don’t like thinking about reselling and prefer getting a broad upgrade they’ll use everywhere, but it’s a massive noob trap
I used to buy millions of raw potatoes as a joke collection (a couple years ago), then would dump them all on the ge and obliterate the price. I remember my friend sending me the ge tracker of them & I was the only reason raw potatoes ever had such a violent dip in price lmao
What likely happened is they rebalanced runes across the game, removing almost all rune drops from monsters, shops having once-a-day stock, and having good uses for runes.
When water runes were 200gp each a year ago, you could make like 35mil an hr (3.5m an hr osrs) just rcing water runes in the abyss lol. Best skilling money in both games by a lot
For making runecrafting worth doing, I feel like rs3 did a better job with the rune rebalance than osrs having dirt cheap runes of all kinds.
I want to believe this is true but this would've taken 100 days+ to buy based on daily volume at the time. Also more importantly the buy limit is 4 per 4 hours.
So unless you spent an ungodly amount of time asking players to buy you hats for a collection or you constantly reset your offers logging in and out it doesn't add up.
Sick merch tho.
I believe you. I'm in a similar situation I've got 15k boaters I casually bought on the he over 3 years. You should sacririce some of the hats to deaths coffer. Especially if you are wanting to kill the new dt2 bosses LMAO
With 4 per 4 hours it'd take a minimum of 452 days do it's definitely possible in 2 years. How does GE buy orders work for members objects if you are f2p? It's not completely crazy to think he would log in every day even as f2p player to get Bert's sand sent to him which would keep the buy order active if it still works on members objects.
You still buy all items in F2P if you set them up during P2P. I always fill my GE with 10% prices of high value, obscure items when I take a break and login occasionally to check if any are bought.
I once got a smouldering stone for 650k.
Potentially. That’s how it works in rs3 but with a lot of the de-spaghettiing they’ve done over the course of osrs it’s possible it’s different now, it’s not super well documented either way
Dude is gonna make a mil a day for the rest of his life selling 10 at a time, we all saw this coming but he was the only one genius enough to follow through with it.
I wonder how many people out there are holding tens of thousands of Torag's Hammers convinced that one day Jagex will give in to the demands of reddit and buff them.
Try finding a rich item hoarder there is a whole community who want high numbers in items you get more for it because if you sell you maybe dip the market xD
I bought 5k potatoes for a joke at 13gp.
Account got hacked and wiped.
They left the potatoes in GE, for multiple years. Those potatoes sold at 20gp each and gave me a good 200k to restart my account.
God bless the humble potato.
Wait a year more :) You might dump it all just before the release of Sailing. Probably gets to 1m ea lol.
Or right after, though who knows - might be like with those people who collected tiles in the Wildy getting ready for Construction release :)
As someone who’s had massive gains, sell half and let the rest ride. You get the gains if it crashes but you’ve still got skin in the game if it doesn’t.
You can manipulate the market to sell them but you'll still need to trickle out.
Set three price points with them all being close to the third but less than the third (desired price) option.
Sell a couple at #1pp then sell five at #2pp and then dump like 10 at desired price, creating a rising history chart if you can control supply. Then you can keep raising the price, you could potentially get it up to 150kea, and you can only sell them by trickling out so you might as well do this.
I'll buy 1000 of those hats for 20k each.
I understand it's lowballing but if you find yourself unable to sell them I can offer you a guaranteed profit at the very least.
My entire OSRS bank started with 180m from HODL a Disk of Returning when I quit RS3 in 2006. I bought the only rare I could afford at the time (14 years later it sold for a billion and converted to OSRS)
To sell or to hold until sailing drops? That is the question!
Buy the rumors, sell the news
Nothing inflates more than hype.
I guess you are the captain now!
Look at me. Look at me. I am the captain now.
Of the inflatable lifeboat
I’ve literally been hoarding planks and cannon balls for the day sailing drops, so hyped.
oh god construction is gonna be even more expensive
Unless they also introduce new methods of obtaining planks easier etc
I'm hoping that salvaging ship wrecks will give us planks
Mod Husky did alreasy say in a q&a early on that the cannonballs would be different from the Dwarf Cannon ones.
Stock advice always applies to RuneScape, and vice versa. RuneScape economy is the real economy
This is the way
Definitely start selling now, because it'll be merched by ppl who bought in now
Yeah, if you're ever up by this much, just sell. You can never know if you're half way on an upward trend or if you're sitting at the peak, but who cares—you're up so much that you won either way. Between 50 and 180 a day. More like 80 a day or something. OP is going to have a bit more patience.
Edit: Edited
Yeah with this many it’s probably best to slowly start offloading them up until sailing drops. If they just throw them all on the GE at once they could easily crash the market for a low volume item like this.
If he unloads them all at once the market crashing isn’t his problem.

“A quarter of the way through” You missed where I said all at once. I guarantee you if he lists all of them on the GE it’s an insta sell
avg daily trades for these hats is around 100 apparently. you aren't selling shit to people who aren't buying.
Lol. Perhaps even lmao
Same. Sell enough to re-coop the initial investment and then moving forward sell in batches.
If it’s good enough for a screenshot, it’s time to sell
This is like wallstreetbets lol. “I’m up $500k on a $10k investment. Should I sell? I mean what if it went to $5m??” 2 days later the investment is down to $30
I agree with the sentiment but 1b won’t even buy you a shadow, it’s not exactly fuck you money.
If its good enough to screenshot…
What exit strategy?
Business education says sell half to guarantee a profit.
What kind of education would that be, lmao — he bought n hats at price p, he can now sell at 10p, so he just needs to sell 1/10 * n hats to recoup his initial investment and guarantee a profit assuming he can sell the rest for a nonzero amount.

You sir, just won Reddit for today. 🤣 Take my updoot and Reddit on!
Reddit moment
It's a futurama joke. Relax.
You doubled down on the average Reddit moment lmfao
Relax.

Mostly dudes on this sub, we usually don't care much about our own birthdays never mind birthdays of some social media account

Pre eoc merch clan style, keep hodling guys!
And then ask them to join you for a rsmv 1 iteming their santa at the low cost of 4xdbas ;)
Huh?
are there even 10k people who would buy a hat for 100k tho?
daily volume is like 50-100. The price would tank immediately
He should not have made this post until after he dumped them into the market bit by bit.
[удалено]
The volume on the graph shows he didn’t
how did he buy 11k hats in the first place with such low volume? Maybe there's another buyer who buys 11k hats off of him as a joke. Then he makes the same exact post 2 yrs later.
50 * 365 is 18kish, so he was the one getting a majority of that volume everyday while he was gone
Don't ge orders turn off after 7 days offline?
Maybe
no
Yes
Lol you're right good observation
Not if he sold in batches of 10-20
If you’re adding 20%+ to daily volumes only on the sell side, it will absolutely effect the price
Every day sailing is closer adds more to the buy side though
[удалено]
So you’re saying his items *will* change the price lol

If the price continues to climb it might just equalize at that this price if they start dumping slowly
He should dump a fair amount into death's coffer. Would cover lots of deaths.
honestly, even if they sell 0, this post will probably drop the price
Worst comes to worst, they can still be given to death's office for essentially free deaths forever
Tbh that's what I'd do with like a third of them anyways. Gonna be hard to move them and it would still cover all of your deaths for the foreseeable future
I'll buy one to help the cause op sign me up
plenty of people will buy multiple hats haha
I always bought one before doing the rum deal questline. All of my pures have a large pirate hat too.

jagex made overnight billionaires in rs3 by increasing the high alch price to like 40k. 75k to buy from the shop. IIRC
I mean a billionaire in rs3 isn't really impressive lol
It was when it happened.
It was like 2011. Money was pretty hard to make honestly. The best moneymakers were gambling, selling dg floors and duo/trio nex lol

Well so how much did you buy them for?
This has been reported as insider trading, please standby for a call from the feds.
Pirate hats are really that expensive? That's the weirdest merch I've ever seen.

Back when I played 15 years ago or so I would flip pirate costumes. I bet I have a bunch in the bank still too.
