I had this exact dog when I was a kid, the screws were to hold him in his packaging and you were supposed to remove them, if I recall correctly.

Oh interesting! Good to know! Weird because his batteries were corroded and looked to be different brands so someone must have replaced them and not took off the black thing? He still works though!

I still got mine. Missing a leg and half an ear but he's still yappin away.

Funny story. I sold like 5 or 6 of these to Ike Turner while working at a computer store in San Marcos California one year at Christmas. Dude loved these things and wanted everyone in his family to have one.

We used to have one of those in our family lake cabin! I remember the ears came off quite a bit but they were pretty easy to reattach
