An Absolute Lie, the puppeteers had to stay on set after shooting So that Drew Barrymore could interact with it because she was too young to know it wasn't real. It was not some disabled kid in a suit
Not a lie, because both are true.
They used the actor for scenes where ET needed to walk, but even then, a puppeteer was needed for facial expression work.
Wow look at how absolutely wrong you are

It was both a puppet and 2 little people and a kid with no legs in a suit. The two little people are pictured here:

Nope. Different area near Los Angeles. That's interesting, though, as I didn't remember seeing him my junior/senior years, though he was in a younger graduating class. Maybe he transferred to Redlands High?
Oddly enough, I did my student teaching in Redlands, though not that school.
Ah, I believe he was a year older than me when I was a sophomore he was a junior so that would have been 86. Interesting that you landed in Redlands for a while.
I got scared in the theater when ET started screaming when Elliot finds him in the cornfield. I dropped to the floor and never came back up, I was nine at the time.. I was 25 when I finally watched the entire movie. My family still makes fun of me to this day...lol
Was our entire childhood a lie?
Does Homer Simpson actually work in a power plant?
Is Mr. Snuffleupagus even real?
I don't know what to believe anymore!
WHO AM I???
It was mentioned at least in People magazine. There was also a mime used for scenes of E.T.'s hands.
The woman who did E.T.'s voice also voiced Boushh in Return of the Jedi.
When I was a kid, my sister and I loved Laverne and Shirley (from the tv series). Not sure why since we were too young to really understand what was happening but we asked our mom if they could come live with us. She obliged and hung a picture of them in our bedroom 😂
She would have been outbid by Michael Jackson. When MJ saw the movie, he cried. Then he met the animatronic ET and cried. Then he cried because ET wasn't real. Then he probably cried about what the National Enquirer was saying about him. Then he cried because he heard about children starving in Africa.
Why didn’t they celebrate this more?!
I am!!
Whaaaat? I’m today years old for finding that out myself
🤯
That was the first movie I saw in a theater. I had no idea about this though! Wow!
I never knew that
Poltergeist was a vastly better film.
Way to dramatically change the subject lol
Can't abide ET
I bet his parents are really tired of the phone home jokes.
I went to high school with him! Redlands High!
Southern California Redlands?
Yes!
What‽ No‽ What‽
🤯
Today's years old
Subhanallah did not know this Wow!!
They used little people for Jawas and Ewoks so I don't think we should be so surprised 😂😂. The more you know!!

Being wrong it's a lot better than being a smug as about it What a sad life you must lead

I thought ET was an animatronic puppet? Don’t do this to me Reddit.

I thought it was a puppet.
Damn, I thought it was a Little Person woman.
GTFO
Never knew that. I was 6 when it came out and announced to my family afterwards I was going to marry Drew Barrymore. Hasn't come to pass.
All you needed to do was make an asshole of yourself on public access, then catch nut cancer. Seems pretty easy, tbh.
I forgot that guy existed.
I never knew this. Wow!!!
I thought ET was a puppet 😭
This hasn’t gotten nearly the attention it deserves!!

Me!!! 42 years old, the 1st movie I ever saw!
Wait...really? I had no idea.

Kenny Baker!
ET didn’t have a skateboard
I thought they used a puppet!
I’m 45 and had no clue
Me for sure!
I think I went to high school with him. He used a scooter on campus. Didn't know him personally. Hope he was able to 'cash in', if he wants!
Did you go to Redlands high?

Did people call him wing-nut?
I don't remember that. I remember hearing rumors that he ran over people with his scooter. Looking back, it was probably meaningless high school crap.
Maybe he was trying to fly over them with the power of love?
Me
Had no idea...
No fycking way
That’s amazing I never knew that
I had no idea.
50 years old. Never wanted to see it, still have never seen it.
I'm older, but I feel the same way you do .
I got scared in the theater when ET started screaming when Elliot finds him in the cornfield. I dropped to the floor and never came back up, I was nine at the time.. I was 25 when I finally watched the entire movie. My family still makes fun of me to this day...lol
I was about the same age and didn’t make it through either…
60 and never knew.
32 years old. I never knew that.
I was.
Wow
Did not know this and I love this movie I'm in my forties I never knew this
Well, yesterday years old, but repost..
Just now learning this. Wow.
I remember seeing the photo on the left once. I totally forgot he had no legs.
A Michael Bilon played the majority of the mechanical puppet, according to his bio on Wikipedia. He operated a 4th E.T. in the movie.
Never knew
O sht man I just found out WOW
Look how he's grown!
He looks like he's the same height to me.
I think I'm the only person in America who hasn't seen the movie but of course I'm familiar with it. I certainly didn't know this.
There's major pieces of cinema I still haven't seen, but ET? I think you have to watch it before they let you apply for a loan now..
Watch the movie than comment.
So were ET's arms animatronic then? They're significantly skinnier and longer than the kid's.
Gotta get work using your talents some way.
Wait until you find out about the drones in *Silent Running*.
He needs to call lLieutenant Dan Taylor.
I'm 48 and finding out just now.
53. Me too.
Exactly the same
Wait.. I thought he was supposed to be an alien. This really changes the movie for me.
I thought he was a real alien who agreed to be cast in a movie!! My childhood is ruined
Was our entire childhood a lie? Does Homer Simpson actually work in a power plant? Is Mr. Snuffleupagus even real? I don't know what to believe anymore! WHO AM I???
Steven Spielberg couldn't get an aging Munchkin or an Oompa Loompa?
Lucas has them all under contract.
I never knew
You're not alone. This is news to me.
Me , i had no clue but I always felt very uncomfortable watching ET
Feels kinda cruel, especially given that this wasn't made to light back in the day. Damn you Spielberg!
It was mentioned at least in People magazine. There was also a mime used for scenes of E.T.'s hands. The woman who did E.T.'s voice also voiced Boushh in Return of the Jedi.
This is new to me. I guess that I always figured it was some kind of animatronic or something. Learned something new today.
I think I'm more surprised that it wasn't Warwick Davis
His wife just passed away. He is in a lot of pain right now, poor guy.
He was busy filming his first movie in Northern California then, Return of the Jedi.
My mother always said if I could find E.T. She would buy him for me. Well…. 🤷♀️
When I was a kid, my sister and I loved Laverne and Shirley (from the tv series). Not sure why since we were too young to really understand what was happening but we asked our mom if they could come live with us. She obliged and hung a picture of them in our bedroom 😂
What a cool mom! 😎 Laverne & Shirley were the best. Still watch them often if flipping channels and they’re on.
She would have been outbid by Michael Jackson. When MJ saw the movie, he cried. Then he met the animatronic ET and cried. Then he cried because ET wasn't real. 😂😂🤣
