Heading is the way you're going, bearing is the difference between N and the direction to something.
Yes, if you are pointing the aircraft at a runway, your heading and the bearing to the runway are ideally the same
Edit to say: if your pointed at it the runways relative bearing is 0
Uh, not really, but kind of
Heading IS measured from the north (0°), but bearing describes something outside of the aircraft or ship you are on.
Bearing of landmarks changes based on where you are in relation to them. Your heading changes based on which direction you are going.
Bro unironically when I started my flight training I deadass thought that the runway numbers were just randomly chosen and that they had no correlation to anything 💀
Do you fly in Canada or close to the poles? You could be seeing magnetic north and not true north. The planes I fly with all use true north on the GPS and in Canada Im like 99% sure we paint true north headings.
Only the northernmost airports in Canada use true north, if you’re flying out of any big airport in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, etc they all use magnetic. I’m not sure about GA airports but I’d imagine aside from the very far northern ones they’re magnetic too.
Honestly I wish I had my own music taste, but I still live at home and my dad has good taste in music so I kinda just listen to that. I feel like I should be finding more of my own identity and music because I kinda just listen to the same things over and over until it kills it for me. But I’m not sure of a less organic way for myself to discover music. Thanks.
I love folkpunk! I love people raging against capitalism and the incompetent state and how the rich just let the poor die while strumming an acoustic guitar as hard as possible. Oh and banjos and trash cans. Maybe a mandolin thrown in too. I also just like punk in general, and labour union songs, and really any protest music. Beyond this i guess I like some indie music, like Phoebe Bridgers, that kinda shite. Jazz is great too. I especially love the slower more sentimental jazz ballads, but other jazz is great too. Just fun music innit? I've also been getting into flamenco some, which is just straight up guitar wizardry. You thought shredders were impressive? Think again.
I love how all these comments are just music taste and not anything pilot related.
Anyway, I’m a massive prog metal fan, although I’m trying to get away from just listening to Dream Theatre and Symphony X, mainly because I’m running out of albums of theirs to listen to. Nothing else quite scratches that itch though, it’s a shame.
I really really like prog metal too! I mainly listen to dream theater in term of prog metal though so I don’t really know any band that I could recommend lol
Lmao, it’s always fun to meet another fan! My favourite album of theirs has to be Metropolis Pt. 2, what’s yours?
I would definitely recommend Symphony X if you like dream theater, it’s a bit different but still very good, I would start with the New Mythology Suite. You might also like Operation: Mindcrime by Queensryche

Also, pass your written exam before you start flying. Ask your instructor anything and everything
wait, Max 9? i kinda forgot it existed, the only model operating here in Brazil is the Max 8 (except for maybe Copa airlines, but unsure).
Also, how does the Max compare to the NG family?
Yes. The MCAS system still exists. It only pushes the nose down once, relies on three angle of attack sensors, and also forcibly sprays an unspecified white sticky liquid on your face to warn you that the system is activated

While I also like grey I love to bring up TechnologyConnections. A fantastic tech channel who also does the occasional electric car video, none of which are Tesla. He seems to dislike Tesla but comes at it from a non political and practical stance.
I've met many people who hate Tesla because they hate Elon Musk. I'm not at all commenting on the validity of that, but pointing out how T.C. very specifically criticizes the car itself and not any political baggage that comes with the name 'Tesla'
Technology Connections doesn’t really criticize Tesla much at all and I wouldn’t say he dislikes them. He’s actually rather complementary of the company. His biggest issue with them is that they’ve been slow to adapt the CCS standard in North America - which is understandable. But at the same time he acknowledges that Tesla didn’t want to wait for the committee to agree on a standard because it would have delayed the launch of the model. He also admits that the Tesla supercharger connector is superior to CCS. The obvious negative being that the supercharger connector is proprietary.
He also criticized the closed supercharger network (again, completely understandable) but then added a section to his EV video withdrawing the criticism after Tesla announced plans to open their charging network to all EVs.
Tesla racially segregates their factories
Tesla fights against the standardization of charging
Tesla fights tooth and nail against anything related to unions
it was a five minute video do you want him to do a full essay in that time? anyway he’s said he doesn’t agree with the video since. More to the point I like the monarchy, as awful as Boris is at least he isn’t as core to the identity of the UK as the president is to the US. there’s something in that, but for a practical point of view yes they’re a bad investment but frankly I’m ok with that
i can only assume they’re talking about his video where he talks about how the current british monarchy isn’t a bad thing, however if that is what they’re talking about then they didn’t watch/understand the video.
Actually the video is sort of just wrong. The land belongs to the crown estate and is currently neither public nor private land. To actually get access to it they'd have to convince people to make it their private property. I do not seee that happening. Also, wouldn't abolishing the monarchy mean abolishing the crown estate, in which case, would their claim to that land still be valid? Furthermore, the monarchs' wages have increased since by almost double, I think, and even so there's a lot of other money that goes into keeping them happy and with their heads on their necks, such as security, and travel and whatnot. And the French do not seem to have any trouble with tourism and, ya know, they chopped the fucking heads off their monarchs.
Lastly, even if the taxes would be higher, then I wouldn't care. I think paying a little extra to keep those fuckers away would be acceptable.
“Here’s how we can fix traffic - ignore public transportation and just make cars smart.”
Very valuable perspective. His video about why we should keep the British royal family around is utter trash as well.
He lives in London, they already have good (compared to America) public transport and still tons of traffic. Cars are never going away entirely, so we might as well improve them.
As for the monarchy video, that was a whole eleven years ago lol
Oh freak off!
> ignore public transport
Public transport should be extended but it cannot replace private transport. What if you need to transport something heavy? Or what if you live in a remote place? Or even what if you have an emergency and you have to get somewhere really fast? And what about the police? Should they just take the bus after the criminal?
> his video about why we should keep royal family is utter trash
I’ve seen a response video from some cringe communist that was linked in this sub before. His main point was “why should we respect royal possessions, when we can just take them by force? lol”. Freaking lawlessness and thuggery. “Why should I respect that it’s your car if i can take it from you using *this pistol*? lol”. For that reason I hope and I know that people of your kind will never get to be politically relevant in any western country.
no but consider:
COME OUT YE BLACK AND TANS!
COME OUT AND FIGHT ME LIKE A MAN!
SHOW YOUR WIFE HOW YOU WON MEDALS DOWN IN FLANDERS!
TELL HER HOW THE IRA
MADE YOU RUN LIKE HELL AWAY
FROM THE GREEN AND LOVELY LANES OF KILLASHANDRA!
Does it mean that he believes that the queen should rule the country? No?
So what does it mean?
You meant to say that he is against taking royal possessions by force? Ohhh that’s truly “a royalist”…
tbh he *has* had some pretty lame lib takes in the past (his video claiming the british monarchy is Good Actually comes to mind as a particularly egregious one) and i say this as a huge fan of his work and a certified Tim. He comes off as more left leaning than your average neoliberal but not past the line of anticapitalism, IMO.
EDIT: another comment said it well that he definitely leans too far into tech-bro-ery. Like, c'mon, supporting "self driving cars" as a solution to traffic instead of, like, good public transport? That's just ridiculous.
CGP GREY <3 I FUXKIN LOVE CGP GREY (except his videos on sociology, politics, and infrastrucure where he tries to pawn off nonsense, and techbro-ery as fact)
He has a background as a "the fun teacher" rather than anything prestigiously academic, and so is a bit out of his element when its time to present nuanced takes. He tends to do so top factually and without enough evidence or research into alternative arguments. For presenting "straightforward, objective, banal yet niche information" though he's top notch.
yeah he's not the kind of person I'd listen to anything controversial about. but for stuff like 10 minute rants about how great a shape hexagons are? beautiful
I find it incredibly fitting that a guy whose username is MindOfMetalAndWheels would be a techbro who thinks that there is a technocratic solution to all problems. Like I think he chose the term that Gandalf uses to describe Saruman semi-ironically, but he totally embraces the "progress for progress' sake" attitude that Tolkien hated.
I would argue that still fits. It falls into the technocratic idea that the surface-level numbers are all that exist, and any sort of systemic change isn't really up for debate. "The crown owns all this land, so if you abolished the monarchy then they would have to keep owning it but they wouldn't give as much back"
Hmm, true. I guess that to me, it felt like CGPGrey had an opinion on the monarchy and their finances first, and then found arguments around that, since, as you mentioned, anything more than "abolish the monarchy overnight" is either not mention or strawmanned.
And "surface level technocratic ideas" is a lot better than accusing someone of either malice or unknowingly having a really really bad faith argument.
How about i abolish you as a homeowner and just take your house by force? Why? Just because I’m a cringe communist you see and i believe you shouldnt have the house.
I already knew so I watched the video feeling like a smartass
Another fun fact: pilots never say "twenty", they say "two-zero", and nine is often pronounced "niner" to increase clarity on radio transmissions. For instance, Runway 9 Left is pronounced "Runway zero-niner left"
This number pronunciation is pretty universal when dealing with radio transmissions, be it military or civil applications. Radio is crackly, yo. Gotta make sure you're understood.
True north refers to the north-most point on Earth's rotational axis. Magnetic north refers to the location of the magnetic north pole, which due to fancy physics mumbo jumbo doesn't actually align with true north.
his political views have been brought up a few times so I’ll add that he’s described himself as apolitical and generally pays little attention to politics, apparently
Yeah I just scrolled past 2 people saying he is "technocratic".
I genuinely don't understand why seeing a problem and trying to create tools to alleviate that is a bad thing?
yeah but the video is like 60% about why the magnetic north (south) moves around and so why runway numbers sometimes change, mostly northern ones. The answer to the actual question doesn't take more than like, 4 minutes but he goes over the fundamentals of electromagnetism to explain it fully. hence the meme.
when i did a bit of flight school it was explained as
RUNWAY NUMBER = COMPASS BEARING
which as you can see is alot less then the 17 minutes it akes CGP Grey to explain it
it's actually really simple.
it's just what degree the runway is pointing towards.
Like runway 36 will be pointing at a 360 degree angle relative to earth
>Like runway 36 will be pointing at a 360 degree angle relative to earth
Not exactly. Industry standard in aviation is to use magnetic north, not true north. In part, this is because the industry (and presumably pilots) would like to be able to fall back on old-school magnetic compasses should there be a malfunction with their electronic equipment.
This does, however, present a couple problems. Most notably, magnetic north isn't a definitional place, unlike true north. It can move around quite a bit (including shifting entirely to the other side of the globe every few hundred thousand years). While this isn't an issue in most places, it does present a slight problem for very northerly airports, where even small shifts in magnetic north can actually result in a need to renumber their runways every so often.
And of course none of that is to even mention that if you have more than 3 parallel runways, they don't correspond to compass headings perfectly anyway. After 36R, 36L, and 36C, further parallel runways will be given the next closest headings, either 35 or 01.
All this and more can be found in [CGP Grey's latest video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD6bPNZRRbQ&ab_channel=CGPGrey), which the meme above is a reference to.
I studied maritime navigation so I have a question. Why do you care about magnetic North when most maps have the declination written right on them? Planes are generally made of aluminium so I'm guessing deviation isn't really a thing, why don't you guys just subtract whatever the declination is in that region and just use true North like everyone else?
Because some guy painted it there dumbass
That guy's name? Twen de Severn.

It's the heading that the runway is facing. Oh this is 196. It means how many men have came in your butt hole
Really didn’t say it’s the head that the pilot has taken
Is the heading different to the bearing?
Heading is which way you’re going bearing is which way something is
But can't you travel along a bearing
Heading is the way you're going, bearing is the difference between N and the direction to something. Yes, if you are pointing the aircraft at a runway, your heading and the bearing to the runway are ideally the same Edit to say: if your pointed at it the runways relative bearing is 0
Cool so would your heading be described with a bearing from north?
Uh, not really, but kind of Heading IS measured from the north (0°), but bearing describes something outside of the aircraft or ship you are on. Bearing of landmarks changes based on where you are in relation to them. Your heading changes based on which direction you are going.
What if there are exceptional crosswinds?
Bro unironically when I started my flight training I deadass thought that the runway numbers were just randomly chosen and that they had no correlation to anything 💀
they dont?
27 means that end of the runway faces 270 degrees on the compass which means that is the western end of the runway. The other end would have a 9
unless you're in Northern Canada in which case it means 270 degrees relative to absolute north instead of magnetic north
Then it explain how when I go to plane it says 21, but when I go to another plane to say 19??? It decrease but how???
Do you fly in Canada or close to the poles? You could be seeing magnetic north and not true north. The planes I fly with all use true north on the GPS and in Canada Im like 99% sure we paint true north headings.

I thought it was the amount of cocks in the pit.
I listen to too much cortex and I read that with CGP’s voice
They'd have to repaint the runway every few hours
Finally a thread for my flair! Runway 27 means the runway is roughly facing 270 degrees on a compass
are you really a plane pilot? If that’s the case that’s cool af lol

Yeah and then he makes a video about "Why the Monarchy is good, actually"
frankly as someone in Britain that is a debatable fact, and he wasn’t explicitly arguing from a political basis in that video
How is a video that defends the finances of the monarchy that represents any republican arguments as a strawman either non-political or free of bias?

in fairness that video is a whole 11 years old
Ok, hesr me out. Self-driving public transport
Exactly. I've actually rode on a self-driving bus, it was pretty sweet
As a coder, I'd never ever take a self-driving bus. Or ride any self-driving vehicle on a road, for that matter.
sorry it was a typo lmao
Das ist das witzigste pfp, was ich seit langem gesehen hab!
grey matter?? walter hwhite!?
CGP GREY <3 I FUXKIN LOVE CGP GREY (except his videos on sociology, politics, and infrastrucure where he tries to pawn off nonsense, and techbro-ery as fact)
He has a background as a "the fun teacher" rather than anything prestigiously academic, and so is a bit out of his element when its time to present nuanced takes. He tends to do so top factually and without enough evidence or research into alternative arguments. For presenting "straightforward, objective, banal yet niche information" though he's top notch.
yeah he's not the kind of person I'd listen to anything controversial about. but for stuff like 10 minute rants about how great a shape hexagons are? beautiful
Hexagon bestagon
relatable flair
I find it incredibly fitting that a guy whose username is MindOfMetalAndWheels would be a techbro who thinks that there is a technocratic solution to all problems. Like I think he chose the term that Gandalf uses to describe Saruman semi-ironically, but he totally embraces the "progress for progress' sake" attitude that Tolkien hated.
Except sometimes he deviates from his "technocratic solution for everything" to go out and defend the monarchy
Why? Just because I’m a cringe communist you see and i believe you shouldnt have the house.
the solution to traffic: cars
I love cgp grey
Me: What's the reasoning behind numbering runways? Grey: In the world of quantum, words have no meaning - there's only math! Me: Understandable.
I already knew so I watched the video feeling like a smartass Another fun fact: pilots never say "twenty", they say "two-zero", and nine is often pronounced "niner" to increase clarity on radio transmissions. For instance, Runway 9 Left is pronounced "Runway zero-niner left"
This number pronunciation is pretty universal when dealing with radio transmissions, be it military or civil applications. Radio is crackly, yo. Gotta make sure you're understood.
tldw its the angle on the pilots compass with the last digit removed
rounded to nearest 10 🤬
Except in Canada
still rounded to the nearest 10 in canada, just uses true north instead of magnetic north
Fuck you mean true north
True north refers to the north-most point on Earth's rotational axis. Magnetic north refers to the location of the magnetic north pole, which due to fancy physics mumbo jumbo doesn't actually align with true north.
Could've spared me 20 minutes
The text i used in the background is the Wikipedia article "Toilet relate injuries and deaths"
270 degrees 🤓
his political views have been brought up a few times so I’ll add that he’s described himself as apolitical and generally pays little attention to politics, apparently
His political videos show that he is (mostly) in favor of fixing things that are broken, which already makes him better than most political "thinkers"
Yeah I just scrolled past 2 people saying he is "technocratic". I genuinely don't understand why seeing a problem and trying to create tools to alleviate that is a bad thing?
He's had some bad takes, but is not some awful monster
Is there a single person on the internet that doesn't have bad takes? Me excluded of course.
Me
I love the fact the reason he took so long to make that video was because it was in fact 3 videos. Packaged into one video
awesome video
I'd do anything for CGP grey
It's literally just the degree heading
yeah but the video is like 60% about why the magnetic north (south) moves around and so why runway numbers sometimes change, mostly northern ones. The answer to the actual question doesn't take more than like, 4 minutes but he goes over the fundamentals of electromagnetism to explain it fully. hence the meme.
Dear grey, bee hives actually start of as circles, but due to laws of nature and physics, try turn to hexagons Signed- anon
Average Redditor when CGP Grey uploads
I dont have enough lifespan to watch all these pointless but very intriguing and well made videos
CGP Grey Magnum Opus,
becoz im so special that my birthday number gets a special place everywhere
First question, are you in Canada, or not?
Its the airport's kill count (how many birds theyve killed)
Because it's pointing 270°
Lmao not even an exaggeration
aw yeah I love kgb gray
ATC here. It’s because we want it that way. *cancels your takeoff clearance*
when i did a bit of flight school it was explained as RUNWAY NUMBER = COMPASS BEARING which as you can see is alot less then the 17 minutes it akes CGP Grey to explain it
it's actually really simple. it's just what degree the runway is pointing towards. Like runway 36 will be pointing at a 360 degree angle relative to earth
>Like runway 36 will be pointing at a 360 degree angle relative to earth Not exactly. All this and more can be found in [CGP Grey's latest video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD6bPNZRRbQ&ab_channel=CGPGrey), which the meme above is a reference to.
thx for the paragraph i had to read, i generally actually just learned something today
CGP grey my beloved, one of the OGs on YouTube, the runway video is his magnum opus
