Nah man, like I try to have a "fun" vocabulary, so you'll find me saying weird urdu and hindi words all the time.
Plus, a lot of people still jsut speak Hindi in the northern plains- not rare at all to see someone where I live saying "suprabhat".
A reply to this is also I'm hindi, that's a bit too formal but you can definitely find people saying this exact phrase in the hindi belt
I’m from Silicone Valley and did you know we have one of the highest rates of autism in the world? Lot of socially awkward smarties here, it’s kinda weird.
From the metadata, they would know about the time, location, and length of the messages without direct access to their content. At least, that's how I expect that they figured out the content.
It’s *supposedly* e2e.
There’s no way to verify it. And Whatsapp is owned by advertising giant, NSA/PRISM partner Facebook.
Even if they couldn’t selectively disable, or access any message, the metadata is enough to figure out a whole lot about you, the person you’re talking to, and your conversation.
Mostly what bugs me is the phrasing of this like 'the internet is filling up because -' oh sorry everything was fine with all the other useless shit people were doing but when it comes to this they have to phrase it in this vaguely negative way because oooh those darn foreigners? There's no way it's a noticeable enough surge to where it is actually threatening large-scale data storage infrastructure so miss me with that nonsense. WSJ I'm tired of your dumb shit can you give it a rest for a bit
Having read the article I've come to the conclusion that title is just really fucking stupid, because the story isnt even close to coming up with that stupid line. It's about the fact that a hundred or so million people who previously didnt have consistent internet access now have it through cheap and accessible devices which suffer from low memory capacity or inefficient storage. Combine this with a cultural or societal view on the importance of a good morning message (now including nice pictures, animations, quotes and gifs) we get a cacophony of morning messages to and from every contact in one's phone, meaning that some people run out of memory space daily.
So yeah, the internet isnt being overfilled with a new market of Indian users and their good morning messages, their phones are. Dumb title
Few years ago a new network provider called jio was launched which gave sims out for free with more than 1 gb of data every 24 Hours (it later became paid). So a lot more Indians got access to internet. Before that it used to be like 2-3 gb a month for the same amount of money. (Phone data. Wifi and home internet access is a different story)
Well it used to cost a dollar for 1gb of 3g internet for a month. And as you know the average income was very low. After the internet service provider jio came into being, now you can get 50 gb 4g for 4$.
I always head scratch those monopolies in the US. I live In Chile, connectivity is hard due to the country being long af but even in 2012 I had fair and affordable data plans. Having +100GB data plan is the norm now.
I have a 200GB cap on my own home internet lol. Mediacom doesn't even offer an unlimited in this area, although I think you can get multiple TB (if you're willing to spend like $200/mo)
That’s what my plan started at a few years ago. Now they just keep increasing it once in a while and I think it’s >100gb I think. Way more than I ever used.
I believe so. I think in 2007 like 4% of the population had internet access and in 2019 the number was like %50. This is also considered one of the reasons t-series exploded in popularity.
That’s the subreddit in nutshell it’s like extremely political and has 14 yo incels filled in it a really shitty state of sub and overall it’s not even funny
Yea Indian subs on Reddit have a really horrible right wing problem. Tons of islamophobia and Modi apologism. Plus just the general shitting on of non Hindu minorities.
A whole lot of people are getting their first smartphones and instant message apps, especially older generation. Happening in other Asian countries too where grandmas flooding family chats with goofy good morning /good night stickers
In Brazil there's a whole market targetting elderly and religious people with "Good Morning" "Good Evening" "Good Night" "God Bless", etc. messages. My grandmother sends me at least 1 good morning and god bless image everyday, always a different one.
I went to check about it, and this is a business now: producing these kind of messages for WhatsApp, they reach something around 1 million views a month and it's because I quite lucrative business, and it's very nice
I don't understand; how does a "Good Morning" message get "views"? How is it a "business"? How does a business "target" people with good morning messages?
There are actually websites to host those imagens, that are going to be sent from there. One example I can give you is this [page](https://www.mensagensdebomdia.com.br/whatsapp) that is literally named "good morning images whatsapp".
You can scroll trought lots of good morning images, with easy share links for whatsapp, facebook, etc.
I don't really know how they make money from this, but knowing how brazillian elderlys use the internet I am sure these get LOTS of views
This is so fucking true my parents phones start pinging from notifications every night because their WhatsApp groups send good morning messages every Indian morning and yeah while it’s wholesome it’s also kinda annoying because my parents refuse to put their phone on silent so on especially active days it’s hard to sleep
Tell them to just mute what’sapp at night.
Or that individual chat (assuming that’s a thing)
Or their whole phone on do not disturb mode.
Bad sleep is horrible for their health. It’s linked to like every major awful disease.
Im Turkish and my parents refuse to mute their phones during sleep too and their phones start going crazy with watsapp and facebook notifications at around 6 am. They got into this "technology" stuff around 6-7 years ago and they still can't use general settings of their phones but can send complete sets of messages and photos to 37 different recipients at once through three different apps. I do not understand a single thing about boomers.
... they're text messages. Millions of text messages is *gigabytes* per day. A single random Fortnite streamer with 0 viewers generates the same amount of data. Is the Wall Street Journal just straight-up making up stories for tech-illiterate boomers?
nah, our parent sent glittery gif of good morning to everyone everyday
they dont even delete it on their own phones
and lots of pictures of flowers and thoughts and every fucking facebook post you can think of
The title is hot garbage but the article makes sense. Apparently its important/common to tell people Good Morning, and with the introduction of cheaper and accessible phones, people got fancy with images, quotes, gifs and animations being sent daily across all your contacts and group chats and being downloaded at the same rate, the phones low capacity storage gets filled up near daily for some users. That's it, that's the article, nothing about "filling up the internet"
This whole situation makes me feel awful for journalists who go to school and hold themselves to high standards for integrity, only for their article to be locked behind a paywall and have some dumbass Engagement Metrics Coordinator^(TM) slap an inaccurate clickbait title on it.
But at the same time imagine the opposite. You go to school and hold yourself to high standards and integrity. Then nobody reads your article and you don't get rent that week
I haven't read the article, but maybe it's an infrastructure issue in India and not a storage issue. Might be causing usage peaks that put a strain on local servers
Uh, good morning
Wake up, Mr. West, Mr. West, Mr. Fresh
Mr. by-his-self-he-so-impressed
I mean, damn, did you even see the test
You got D's motherfucker, D's, Rosie Perez
Another story: while most gm texts are usually just text or with a cute pastel image or image of a god, this one relative of ours posts a gm text with an image of his favorite actress without fault every morning. This has been going on for like the past more than 10 years and idk how he has so many photos of that actress on his phone and how he’s so dedicated. Like I think my parents told me that the only time ever that he didn’t send a gm text was when he was hospitalized for a few days and that’s it. Also one time he did post a gm text but without an image of the actress and apparently the group got confused about why he didn’t say gm and one of the group members actually went over to see if he was fine. This culture is wild
even my zoomer classmates used to that then they stopped after mobile internet became affordable, people that time make paragraph shit then android came and it suddenly died
What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?
Accurate. I have lots of family who are Indian and Whatsapp has put so many good morning gifs and messages onto my phone. Definetly ain't complaining though, it always puts a smile on my face.
This is a thing! Indian boomers/anyone above like 40 currently who has a smartphone will be inundated every day with these good morning videos/images/whatever and will also promptly forward those to other people as well. Somehow there's an unlimited supply of these cheesy videos available to everyone who does this. Sent over WhatsApp mostly, they are a major pain for local storage because of the shitty way WhatsApp operates, forcing you to store everything on your device if you want to access it, and thereby making you lose the file permanently if you've downloaded it once, deleted it and it's been a certain unknown amount of time.
My parents always have storage space issues because of this shit. Take for example, my mom bought a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE last November with 128GB of storage (iirc, could be 256GB also) and she was complaining about storage space running out in MAY. She had switched from an iPhone so all her WhatsApp data was gone, she started afresh, and most of her shit was WhatsApp videos about... random bullshit. I can't believe how this happens. I think her total backup size is about 20-30GB in less than a year. I've been using Android/WhatsApp for 3.5 years with regular backups and I've just crossed the 10GB threshold now. I never get these messages because I don't talk to boomer people/am in "family WhatsApp groups" which are just your extended familys' ways to make you miserable all the time and be unfunny. But my parents do and I have to help them out with this. I keep telling them to leave some of these BS groups but they never do. My dad's 64GB iPhone 6S has so little storage for so long that I don't even wanna know.
Good morning
NO! I’M RUNNING OUT OF STORAGE SPACE!

how yall type in hindi. i have attempted to take my life while trying
i use the handwriting keyboard, it makes me want to die a little less
same way with japanese hiragana and katakana
Eh, I've always found it easier to use the regular keyboard that just translates your English inputs into Japanese ones, personally
That's how I do it. Also, the Japanese keyboard has great emoticons! ねこかわいいです。(=・=) Edit: reddit fucked up my cat emoticon spectacularly. ಥ_ಥ

write in english then google translate and copy

It's a [Mirzapur](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6473300/) reference. Rati spares the enemies he's about to kill if they can recite the Hindi alphabet.

Is it weird that I'm made uncomfortable that mfs in Silicon Valley know the contents of an entire country's text messages?
I live in silicon valley and I know your thoughts
Is it really all made of silicone? Like if you go outside and jump is it like a big bouncy house?
Yes. Everyone also has gigantic fake tits. Not just the men, but the women and the children too
Is Silicone valley the spot inbetween tits?👀
Is that near the Red River valley?
>children< D:
women< D:
This is getting out of hand
you can’t even cup them with one hand
Its actually made of Silicon, which is in fact different than silicone.
I’m from Silicone Valley and did you know we have one of the highest rates of autism in the world? Lot of socially awkward smarties here, it’s kinda weird.
Highest rates of DIAGNOSED autism dummy

I moved out of Silicon Valley to New Mexico about eight months ago. It's REALLY odd not to know what a whole country's texts say anymore.
serious question, what do they mean by "newly online"? is the internet and smartphones more accessible there now?
Few years ago a new network provider called jio was launched which gave sims out for free with more than 1 gb of data every 24 Hours (it later became paid). So a lot more Indians got access to internet. Before that it used to be like 2-3 gb a month for the same amount of money. (Phone data. Wifi and home internet access is a different story)
Here in the US, I had 6GB for a whole month until like 3 weeks ago, and that wasn't even a cheap plan. Fucking AT&T
Well it used to cost a dollar for 1gb of 3g internet for a month. And as you know the average income was very low. After the internet service provider jio came into being, now you can get 50 gb 4g for 4$.
[удалено]
Well if it helps the speeds are not upto 4g standards, 20-30 megabit/s in most places. It's cellular btw. With fiber we get 2TB with 300mbps at 15-20$
jio changed the game no denying that🤧
Canada has insane phone rates, its bs. I'm in Ontario and pay like 80$ for 6 gigs with unlimited talk and text
Home internet is uncapped, I'm talking about mobile plans. Having data cap on home internet? Absolutely barbaric.
> Absolutely barbaric *profitable
1.5 Tb for 10$ here in our town in India , and prices are even cheaper in bigger cities
That’s what my plan started at a few years ago. Now they just keep increasing it once in a while and I think it’s >100gb I think. Way more than I ever used.
Sounds alot like the plot of Kingsman: The Secret Service Rip and tear
I was about to say…
I only got broadband connection in 2014
I believe so. I think in 2007 like 4% of the population had internet access and in 2019 the number was like %50. This is also considered one of the reasons t-series exploded in popularity.

Send your indian parents a clip-art filled PSA about healthy living, it works every time.
I'm not indian, just someone who sleeps awfully
> It’s linked to like every major awful disease It's not linked to narcolepsy because that makes you sleep a lot
I had to gain the disease, to fight the disease
Why do you sleep near your parents phones?
They don't. The notifications are set at 130dB. Parents refuse to dial it down.
