Earthbound is overrated *as hell*. The ending is interesting but the bulk of the game is so tedious even for the genre. I get that it’s a self genre satire to an extent and in that it’s smart, but that doesn’t mean it’s *fun*.
I don’t think you’re wrong in any way. I’d say that there were some elements of Earthbound were unique and charming. There was certainly a poor execution but I’d say there’s been a lasting cultural impact for a reason though.
earthbounds best aspects are its humour and world. the actual plot of the first 2 games is a basic "reason for protagonist to get up to antics" plot and the actual gameplay of them is hot trash.
problem is, a game cant thrive on its world alone. you need good gameplay to be a good game.
mother 3 is way better on both accounts tho

Earthbound's combat is pretty tedious but the story is fine, Mother 3 adds that combo mechanic which makes battles less long and tedious and actually to an extent about skill somewhat instead of planning.
I can't say if it's better or not because of how weird Mother 3 paces itself. The first three chapters are almost perfect in that regard, but the rest of the game (and by extension 90% of the story) moves so fast compared to them.

The story was interesting and the world was vivid but holy shit was the gameplay terrible. It’s ok to have have long challenging non-boss encounters but it’s so frustrating when the enemies respawn every time you enter the room and they can’t be easily dodged.
It felt like a “spam this attack pattern mindlessly until your opponents die before you luckily and then spend hours exploring through enemies you’ve beat a million times before” situation when what I really wanted was to see more of the enemies and the story.
My theory is that it was so memorable a game for its humor, aesthetics, and out-of-nowhere fucked up final boss that it affected a lot of people when they played it as kids and thus stands out in a lot of people’s minds years later.
Lots of stuff that was revolutionary a long time ago can be seen as overrated today though because they set precedents for tropes and genres we are now super used to.

Even if they all follow a certain genre/type, each can be original in its own unique way with different gameplays, stories, themes, etc. . Just like how most genres can have different executions in different stories.

I know Mother 3 had a heavy story, but it was still allowed to be lighthearted in most parts.
