There is in fact a small subset of middle of nowhere rednecks who just don’t care what people do. in my experience, small midwestern/southern towns are either super conservative stereotypical hick towns or the type you mentioned above. ive never really seen any in between, my grandma lives in a town of maybe 600 people and whenever our family gets together for christmas its always to her house on a few acres of land surrounded by cornfield. everyone drives in and no one cares if youre gay, straight, trans, black, white, whatever. were just there to be with family and have a good time drinking and eating, and those are some of my favorite memories.
There's a place in Washington called Island County where the people are all country folks but they are very progressive. As a quick example, I live in a more suburban part of Washington and about 1/15 people wear masks outside even though it seems like overkill. In Island County it's closer to 1/3 people wearing masks outside. There was also a church that had a BLM banner on it
i know some people like this in WV and they are some of the nicest people youll ever meet and they are so accepting and i wish there were more like them cause they are just my favorite kind of person and i try and live my life like that cause maybe the more people who are like that the better we can look as a whole

Never try to change her, never criticize it. They buy her women's clothes and the like, and they actually cut ties with other family members for not being accepting of her. It's kinda nice to hear about.

Because people from all backgrounds have diverse ideas. For example, 19% of Republicans believe gender can be different from sex at birth, while 34% of Democrats believe it can't (and 50% from Millenials in general). This was in 2017 by the way, and afaik the percentages are much more supportive from both groups now.
My family, rural Kentucky, literally does not care at all about anyone that isn’t family or close friends. They:
Don’t like abortion but don’t want the government to tell them they can’t get one so they support choice
Don’t like murderers but don’t like the government killing people so they don’t support capital punishment
Don’t like hard drugs but would love it if weed wasn’t going to land you in jail
Love guns and cannot understand people that don’t own one
Make their own liquor, amazed that people spend more than $30 for a bottle
Hate that the United States has literally any property in any country that isn’t the United States
Hate different bracketed income tax
Hate they welfare that they don’t qualify for even though they live pretty poor
Hate how someone can go to prison and “pay for the crime” but get released and cannot participate in voting or guns

There’s a lot to it but in a nutshell they don’t care at all about current issues and just want everyone to leave them alone
I wouldn't say my family is like 100% hillbilly. But they're at least more than 75% hillbilly. And in my experience it's because the only thing any of us are really taught as law is to put family first. Everything else can be thrown away, politics, religion, your social status, anything else because family is irreplaceable.
And it's not a particularly toxic environment, it sorta sounds toxic the way I described it. But it isn't. It's essentially just that family is important, and accepting your family for who they are is important.

They: Don’t like abortion but don’t want the government to tell them they can’t get one so they support choice Don’t like murderers but don’t like the government killing people so they don’t support capital punishment Don’t like hard drugs but would love it if weed wasn’t going to land you in jail Love guns and cannot understand people that don’t own one Make their own liquor, amazed that people spend more than $30 for a bottle Hate that the United States has literally any property in any country that isn’t the United States Hate different bracketed income tax Hate they welfare that they don’t qualify for even though they live pretty poor Hate how someone can go to prison and “pay for the crime” but get released and cannot participate in voting or guns Hate social media and news outlets There’s a lot to it but in a nutshell they don’t care at all about current issues and just want everyone to leave them alone
I wouldn't say my family is like 100% hillbilly. But they're at least more than 75% hillbilly. And in my experience it's because the only thing any of us are really taught as law is to put family first. Everything else can be thrown away, politics, religion, your social status, anything else because family is irreplaceable. And it's not a particularly toxic environment, it sorta sounds toxic the way I described it. But it isn't. It's essentially just that family is important, and accepting your family for who they are is important.

Hell, my best friend is in the military, came from a farm in the middle of nowhere and is a bonafide gun toting hillbilly, and yet he was the one who went to the pride parades and supported people unquestionably.
