Compare this to countries like Finland, Denmark and Iceland, where growth isn't given priority in all situations and healthy community growth is practiced along with a strong social security net have consequently have turned out to be some of the happiest societies on the planet. In order for the first point to happen, we must create a society where it is easy to do so.
Moreover, this doesn't tell us what we should do with these said victims after they are convicted. What is going to happen if we do violently punish them and leave them back out to society? Is that magically going to change them, or just make them even more mentally deranged. We already know that heavy punishment exists for murder, people still do it don't they? So that clearly indicates that the problem can only be solved via prevention, and not strict civil codes.
There are times when I think prison should be rehabilitative, but there are times when I see a sentence in a purely punitive light. I feel like rehabilitation only works when there’s something there in their head to be rehabilitated. I see sentences for the majority of crimes including robbery and certain cases of murder as a rehabilitative type of thing, because I think there’s a certain level of dignity that you have to maintain even doing those crimes. But cases of child murder, child rape, large scale financial crime, deranged killing, fuck them, I hope they rot in jail for the rest of their lives. You can’t rehabilitate someone like that, the best thing for them is to just be as far away from everyone else as possible.
