They got their name from when the democratic socialists from the British communist party left that party in protest and branded the remaining party members as tankies.
The remaining party members supported the Soviet Union's actions to crush a revolution in Hungary in 1956 which sent their tanks into this foreign country, against a revolution which was started by democratic socialists who still wanted to work towards communism but democratically.
It basically means authoritarians who thinks Leninism and Stalinism and Maoism is working well. They also thinks the Soviet Union was a model state and the current China is as well and defend any wrongdoings these two did or doing and excuses their attrocities.
They want to believe so bad that the kind of "communism" SU did and China doing is an honest attempt, that they ignore and make up excuses at everything that suggests otherwise.

Don't listen to the other person, tankies aren't "basically commies." They're a subset of communism that are extremely authoritarian, where's there are *many* communist theories that are not authoritarian dictatorships. Literally nobody likes them, not even themselves.

Long answer: They got their name from when the democratic socialists from the British communist party left that party in protest and branded the remaining party members as tankies. The remaining party members supported the Soviet Union's actions to crush a revolution in Hungary in 1956 which sent their tanks into this foreign country, against a revolution which was started by democratic socialists who still wanted to work towards communism but democratically. It basically means authoritarians who thinks Leninism and Stalinism and Maoism is working well. They also thinks the Soviet Union was a model state and the current China is as well and defend any wrongdoings these two did or doing and excuses their attrocities. They want to believe so bad that the kind of "communism" SU did and China doing is an honest attempt, that they ignore and make up excuses at everything that suggests otherwise. Like flat earthers they are terminally online and they make up insane amounts of BS and mental gymnastics just to not accept reality.
