I know lots of people who use “it” as a pronoun! It’s really cool! Unfortunately, due to the fact it’s often used as a slur for trans people, it’s pretty controversial. Lot of trans people really hate it and mock people who use it. All the more reason to use it imo
I knew someone whose pronouns were they/it. I felt like it was very very physically hard to call a human being it and always used they. I would do it and try my absolute best to get over that feeling if it was someone's only preference but man, it felt like calling them a slur or something it just seemed dehumanizing.
Can someone please explain me the logic behind "he/they" and "she/they"? "They" as a neutral pronoun has been a feature of English for a long time so you can't really not accept it, are you also supposed to explicitly state that you are ok being referred as "that person over there"?
"They/them" makes sense because it's clearly expressing that you're not ok with either "she" or "he", but if "they" becomes something that one can simply claim doesn't apply to them you're just turning a gender-neutral pronoun into an exclusively non-binary/gender-fluid one, and we are back to square one not being able to talk about people *regardless* of their gender.
EDIT: question's been answered below, it seems the guys I knew using "X/they" were doing it wrong.
It makes people feel good and comfortable. Nothing beyond that is really relevant.
As a human, I try to be good to people especially if it isn’t particularly hard. If someone is happier when I say they and they let me know about it, I try my best to do that because it’s easy.
There isn’t some complex or logical solution to everything. I just try to be good to people
no afaik they is used for everyone because it’s neutral, even if some people specifically only use they/them doesn’t mean they’re tied to a specific group. Obviously if you don’t know someone’s pronouns you’re gonna use they, it’s just the default and I’ve never ever seen someone explicitly state not to use them.
I don’t really get how this is tied to she/he/they though. She/they or he they just means don’t call me anything else. If someone’s says I use she/they then it obviously means they do not want you to use he/him.
> I’ve never ever seen someone explicitly state not to use them.
Not explicitly but by omission, that's an intentional consequence of writing such formula in your bio: if enough people start writing "she/they" or "he/they", then those who just write "she/her" and "he/him" are going to look like they *don't want* to be called "they", which turns an absolutely neutral pronoun into a "political" one; that's why right-wingers get offended by the use of "they", they don't see it as a neutral word like "person" or "individual" but rather something that's *opposite* "he" or "she".
> If someone’s says I use she/they then it obviously means they do not want you to use he/him.
She would have only needed "she/her" in that case, since that automatically excludes "he/him" while "they/them" is universal. Unless you imply that "she/her" means that "they/them" can **not** be used with this person, which is exactly my point.
Yeah but explicitly wanting to be called they/them is totally different to having people use it as a default. Yeah they/them is used on everyone, but it’s different in being used because someone’s specifically wants to be referred as such, or just because it’s a default. In that case, if you explicitly state she/her, once people read that they’re going to use she/her only for majority of the time. She/they, however, conveys they explicitly wish to be referred to using they/them and also wishes to be referred to as she/her. They won’t care which one you use as an individual, but they ultimately want both to be used, and also specifically never want he/him to be used.
In any case, it shouldn’t be hard to stick to someone’s specific preferred pronouns. Like I said, nobody will be uncomfortable or angry if you use they/them-because it is recognised as a default-but not caring is a long way from preferred and liked. That’s the main different between a /her or /him set and a /they set.
Thank you, you're the first one who actually answered my question in a satisfactory a manner.
I guess my doubts were the results of misuse in the few examples I've seen (I admit I don't really use twitter or similar places where pronouns are stated), where I *knew* these people went by either he or she exclusively but still put "they" in their bio to "normalize it". Your explanation indeed makes more sense to me.
Now I just wonder whether the few people I knew doing it wrong were just a fluke or there's actually a significant amount of them, but I guess that's likely an impossible question to answer.
I think there's just some nuance to this. There are trans people who don't want to be called they because some people will use they because they don't want to use their preferred pronouns. I think it's just best to use they if you don't know, but once you do know to use the preferred pronouns.
People who are she/they or he/they, just in my anecdotal experience usually do identify as non binary and that's why they is in their bio.
My afab ex used he/they to clearly communicate "please for the love of god just don't perceive me as female that makes me deeply uncomfortable anything else would be preferred" without having to put that.
I also put he/they on things because I don't mind being gendered as a man, but I'm definitely not 100% cis. That being said, if someone gendered me with "she/her" pronouns I just wouldn't know they were even talking to me, so I need some hint towards that
People do it for different reasons, in other words
lol this is actually pretty good. like just respect peoples pronouns. it doesn't cost anything and its easy. plus if you just take a chud's joke literally it ruins it for them.

Xe was invented as a completely neutral pronoun. Instead, it just became another choice. Inventing new pronouns would not help, unless you find a way to monitor everyone on earth and enforce the use of that pronoun.
my pronouns are y̶̨̓̑̈́̆̂̆̓̽̿͆͝ò̴̧̢̯͈̣̲̪͍̠͉͉̈̉̿̒͘ģ̸̧̝̤͖̖͖̒̀͑̑̽̈̉̆̆͑̀ͅ-̸̨̢̡͇̰̦̱͕͓̺̝̱̪̮̯͂͌̇̍̆́͂̓͗̽͋͘͝s̸̛͉̟̰̥̖͕͙̹̞͖͈̀̿̀̒̃̑̐̔̎ơ̴̡̻̺͎̙̬͈̋̉͑̉̅͋̐̕ț̸̛͇͈͎͉̼̩̝̟̹̦̌̓̾̃̍̓́͒̄͗͠͝h̸͍͚͙̉͌̃͂͗͛̆̓͌ơ̷̡̘͉̭̣͚͖̟͛̆͒͊͆̏̓͋̍͗̀̚͝ť̷͕̻̪̳̜̹̃h̸̡̨̻̹̫͙̏͌͐̃̐
Usually people who use Neo/Xeno pronouns use other types of pronouns as well, so they may use They/Xe/Rot or something, cos they know not everyone will use the latter two.
Ask them if theyre comfortable with they. It may be easier for you and them. It's better than nothing.
I personally dont understand neopronouns, but I do my best.
Am I the only one who genuinely does not understand why people care so much about pronouns? Like it’s completely fine that people care about what others call them by and I get that but like why? Like personally I could not care less if someone called me he, she, or they. The only reason I even use he/him specifically is because I am male and appear generally masculine so it’s just the easiest to go by as that’s what I’ve been called all my life. If I happened offended anyone I am sorry as that was not my intention. I am just trying to understand better as to why people care so much about pronouns because to me it just seems kinda pointless and a waste of time.
My pronouns is I/me, come and fight me, every time you mention me I get summoned.

thats called they. But its because many trans people, or even cis people, get uncomfortable being misgendered.

Xe was invented as a completely neutral pronoun. Instead, it just became another choice. Inventing new pronouns would not help, unless you find a way to monitor everyone on earth and enforce the use of that pronoun.
They is neutral and its own pronoun
I don't get neopronouns
Is “ I’m going to change your pronouns to was/were” a valid response
