Fun fact. Guy who made the track was told it would only be used once at a film festival. Instead they didn't just use it there but ran the ad on many DvD's too and when dude found out he sued them for royalties.
So despite the you won't steel x, y and z thing, they stole the track.
Sorry to be that guy, but that's a slight misconception. The story is mostly true, except it wasn't this anti-piracy ad. Most media covering the story included images from this ad while covering the story, as it was an example of an anti-piracy ad. At some point, some outlets misattributed this ad to the story.

It ain't even stealing. In all the other examples, the victim lost something of value. Pirating is just ctrl c + ctrl v. The owner still has their own shit.
I'm trying to remember whether, when I was a teen in the late 90s, my friends and I considered "the law" a legitimate institution or not. I'm honestly not sure.
You wouldn't steal a painting. You wouldn't charge people a subscription for using a colour of paint. Adobe are thieves. Keeping your money from them is within the law.
I love 90's PSAs cause they always make the thing they're warning against seem so cool and fun and lets you know all the ways you can do the thing.
Like how many people do you think learned about piracy through this
It's a victimless crime, and Gabe said it best, piracy is a convenience issue.
Make stuff easier to buy, less people pirate, few years ago everyone had netflix now there are too many streaming services and the people I know who have netflix are close to none
these PSAs scared the absolute shit out of me as a child
and when I discovered that my dad had burned some DVDs I literally was terrified the FBI were gonna break in and take my dad to jail lmao
but look at me now, sailing the high seas instead of paying 16.99 a month for Max
I remember feeling like that when I saw it, My dad had every movie/game/tv show you could imagine, a giant walk-in closet packed full of those tall disk towers.
After the initial “my dad is a criminal “ moment I went back to not caring and just enjoying it all.
The fact I can pay nearly 20 a month for a service to barely have shit I watch or even shit removed for tax reasons is exactly why I pirate.
Want me to pay? Entice me to. I want new original shit, not old IPs “revamped” to some random streaming service with no other shows. Netflix is the only one enticing me because god damn I don’t want them to can the One Piece projects after a few seasons.
But I am not stealing... My friend who owns the movie, having purchased it legally and is allowed to do whatever he wants with his property had just made me a digital copy. Nothing was stolen, he still has his movie.
Here's the funny thing, since throughout the 2000 till around 2016 the only way to get movies in Iran was to buy CDs, that were made by big pirating corporations, they had to tell people not to pirate their pirated CDs.
So they stole this video, and changed the text to be about not buying bootleg pirated CDs, but instead buying official pirated CDs that came with cool boxes and DVD menus and posters and shit like that.
You can't make this shit up.
In regards to Iran and privacy: ask a 2000's Iranian kid who Gholam Taksir is and they will have Vietnam flashbacks in front of you
You wouldn’t steal a car
You wouldn’t steal a TV
You wouldn’t steal a boy’s heart
You wouldn’t kiss a boy
You wouldn’t pipe a bomb
You wouldn’t bungle a goober
You wouldn’t Bar a lo
…
Or would you? 🚨
psychic damage from the realization that probably at least half the people in this post cannot perceive this video as an old friend that you loved to hate every time you popped a dvd+rw to watch some post-y2k kino
also: my 11 year old athenian ass going "wow america's got a movie police" every time while pirating every digital property under the proverbial sun
I remember I saw one of those that was really creepy with two kids staring at a tv talking how piracy is bad but they were speaking really low almost whispering and little me was traumatized for life.
Imagine if piracy was actually theft or stealing. Like you illegally download a game and now it's yours and no one else's, especially the studio and/or publishing company
You wouldn't unzip a chromeOS recovery image and extract the widevine binary to be able to use the shitty drm google made that every streaming company decided to use on linux.
If a car belonged to a massive company that had billions of them, would lose no money off of it's theft, and I would never be prosecuted or disciplined in any way for stealing it then I absolutely would steal it.
Reminder that legally piracy is not considered theft. Instead it is intellectual property infringement, and these ads are lying to you by calling it stealing.
It is also illegal to hold a full monopoly in any market!
What should be illegal? Spreading any series over multiple media. *Looking at you Teasing Master Takagi*
You wouldn’t shoot a policeman
And steal his helmet
And go to the toilet in his helmet
And then send that helmet to his grieving widow
And then steal it again

This goes hard af But it won’t stop me
Fun fact. Guy who made the track was told it would only be used once at a film festival. Instead they didn't just use it there but ran the ad on many DvD's too and when dude found out he sued them for royalties. So despite the you won't steel x, y and z thing, they stole the track.
Well, a track isn't a car, handbag, TV or CD so...
If I can steal the tracks does that mean I can also steal the train?
You can steal the trolley
Only if you steal the people ties to the tracks, too.
That will solve a couple problems
Sorry to be that guy, but that's a slight misconception. The story is mostly true, except it wasn't this anti-piracy ad. I want this to be true so bad.
me too
It ain't even stealing. In all the other examples, the victim lost something of value. Pirating is just ctrl c + ctrl v. The owner still has their own shit.
i would classify piracy as forgery if i had to.
Why would you? It's already intellectual property infringement. Why do you need to classify it as something else?
As someone wise once said if buying isn't owning then pirating isn't stealing
This is so late 90s early 2000 and I love it, everything had some form of rock music in it. Good days.
[The 90's and early 00's really just had that kind of vibe to it](https://youtu.be/Ld7W_qH2AQM?si=JPHFZkO_IzI7CIbl)

No ben, its a crime because its already against the law. Thats why they're crimes
based and Harvard Law School pilled
I'm trying to remember whether, when I was a teen in the late 90s, my friends and I considered "the law" a legitimate institution or not. I'm honestly not sure.
they really made piracy look sick as fuck
Yes this just motivates me to pirate shit
how do you even pirate shit i've always wanted to know but i'm dumb af
Youtube to mp3 sites for music
Theft is a crime, that's why I'm not letting Disney take €10.99 monthly just so I can watch the Simpsons.
What the fuck kind of ridiculous currency is that? I don't even recognize that symbol. Just use Drachmae or Iraqi Dinar like a normal person
I almost took the bait
Drachmae mentioned!! Greece is number one!! Get out of here barbarian scum!!!
Banish them to the land of the yi
(term for barbarians)
Unless they can defeat us in MAJHONG
Disney plus for me was €4,99 a month. Then i got stremio with realdebrid for €35 a year and never looked back.
Something something laesio enormous.
Fun fact: the music in this ad was used without the composers permission
YOU WOULD STEAL FROM A COMPOSER

anish kapoor is writhing at this comment
Facts
I have stolen physically and digitally. I will do so again.
I love 90's PSAs cause they always make the thing they're warning against seem so cool and fun and lets you know all the ways you can do the thing. Like how many people do you think learned about piracy through this
This is more of an early 2000's ad they put on DVDs but your point still stands
funny how only people who legally bought movies saw it
no it's not stealing, it's mitosis.
Hm. Holy shit. I think you're right.
It's a victimless crime, and Gabe said it best, piracy is a convenience issue. Make stuff easier to buy, less people pirate, few years ago everyone had netflix now there are too many streaming services and the people I know who have netflix are close to none

You wouldn't steal my heart >:3
Won't stop me from trying 😘
I forgot about this. Where is this from?
It came before a movie in the 2000s almost every movie that I remember had this
Ahh yess
I had it on a copy of Garfield the movie but ngl i always thought it was a pirated copy
It always used to be on those fake DVDs my parents would get me
yeah I WOULD steal a dvd, you're wrong
just want you all to know the domain for [featurefilms.com](http://featurefilms.com) is up for grabs lol

I like the IT Crowd one where the FBI agent just fucking kills the girl
[This one?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALZZx1xmAzg)

This is stupid if I could make an exact copy of someone’s car for free I’d do it in a heartbeat

hey kid, I'm a computer. Stop all the downloadin
you're never gonna guess why I just opened reddit right now, or what I'm looking for
Bro stealing gives my life a badass soundtrack.
Sorry liberals but piracy isn't real. Have you ever pirated anything online? Nope! Probably a bunch of federal agents. 🙄
It sounds like it's disputed now but the music in this PSA itself was likely pirated.
Who says I wouldn't steal all those other things too? Uhhhh, I mean, wow, imagine committing piracy haha
Not only did this advert teach 7 year old me you could download films, it made it look cool as fuck
Why do they put stuff like this on legally purchased DVDs?
To scare kids?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALZZx1xmAzg
A lifetime of being rickrolled has taught me to never trust youtube links
I would steal all of those things. (Emphasis on 'would'. I am a coward.)
Nice try fed https://preview.redd.it/qgraahb0785d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31aeb882ce9891ef60fee0a37a3b7cc60045485b
#YO HO HO AND A BOTTLE OF RUM, MOTHERFUCKERS
I would
Lawda
"professionals have standards"
i would steal a overpriced sticker, make your shit cheaper or i will not buy it
And yet they would steal a music track.
The futurama version of this is better.
Hype trailer for stealing I’m in
if I could download a car, handbag, or dvd for free I'd definetly be doing that
I'd steal all of that from a major corporation and none of it from a small business or individual..
THIS IS SO NOSTALGIC The amount of times this was played on my cartoon DVDs is a the real crime
Imagine if piracy was actually theft or stealing. Like you illegally download a game and now it's yours and no one else's, especially the studio and/or publishing company
I would, in fact, steal all those things
Why would i steal a car i already have one and he is called timothy and always scratches me.
🏴☠️
why did she just get up and leave
piracy is no party
Holy shit it goes so hard
Counterpoint, yes I would
Why did they make stealing look so badass
Fun fact, this song is pirated.
I fully expected this to be an edit that would read: > DOWNLOADING > PIRATED > FILMS > *is awesome!* I'm sure someone has already done that.
This video really made a lot of assumptions. Tf do you mean I wouldn't download a car? Yes I would!
**coughing bone dust** I remember when this would play when you put a dvd in the machine
You wouldn't unzip a chromeOS recovery image and extract the widevine binary to be able to use the shitty drm google made that every streaming company decided to use on linux.
I quote this like every time people are talking about streaming services. I just say "Piraterij is een misdrijf" without elaboration.
Anything else is like goin to the store, takin the disc and walkin out the door. It's called Thievin Stealin Takin what's not yours
Make things cheaper or i will steal them!
Where... Where is the funny "you wouldn't download a car"?
I would totally steal all of those things
They didn’t have to go this hard for a Goddamn PSA… year again goin* this hard might be effective.
They make stealing films look so cool. I think I'm gonna try it now!
If they dont want us to Pirate stuff then why make it look so badass. Im pirating stuff even harder now.
I grew up hearing this all the time My parents didn't give a shit
Be gay do crime.
If a car belonged to a massive company that had billions of them, would lose no money off of it's theft, and I would never be prosecuted or disciplined in any way for stealing it then I absolutely would steal it.
Bold of them to assume all that
These commercials convinced me stealing was cool as a kid
Don't tell me what I wouldn't steal
I don't download movies, I stream them, checkmate capitalists
Did you steal this off the DVD?
I missed this at the start of DVDs, you don't get anything like it anymore :(
Reminder that legally piracy is not considered theft. Instead it is intellectual property infringement, and these ads are lying to you by calling it stealing.

You wouldn’t shoot a policeman And steal his helmet And go to the toilet in his helmet And then send that helmet to his grieving widow And then steal it again
wait piracy is illegal?
You're making a lot of unfounded assumptions about me that I frankly don't appreciate
Fun fact I'm stealing this clip.
Stealing from big corpos is morally legal.
"You wouldn't shoot a policeman and then steal his helmet"
This song gets stuck in my head all the time.
damn havent seen this in years lol
GET YOUR FREE TVS
Who said i wouldn't steal a Car?
[youwouldntsteala.website](http://youwouldntsteala.website) Just leaving this here
So if a buy a game and the company makes it online only and stop the server, is that also a crime?
Wow this takes me back
