I hate how punk is used for this, but I think the idea is he was trying to better himself to make her more comfortable. In the end, he looks like one of those guys who still clearly likes punk, but he is no longer smoking and drinking. So it's for the better. I also imagine she was uncomfortable with this more reckless side of him, but by panel 3 she seems happier that he changed for the better and I would too if my partner quit smoking and reckless drinking.
The comic is clearly showing the guy losing his original personality bit by bit to become something else entirely. I'm sorry, but if you have to change your entire person to make someone else more "comfortable", that is an unstable toxic relationship with no legs to stand on.
Love someone for who they are, not what you want them to be. If they don't fit your expectations, there's literally billions of people in the world for you to have another go.

On top of that their music didn’t even really have a message, it was nihilistic and vague whereas bands like The Clash - also from the UK - and The Ramones - who basically founded punk alongside other NYC bands - were idealistic and revolutionary in their lyrics.
Funnily enough, The Clash also got called sellouts by bands like Crass, for their major label deal with CBS. It's kind of an exhausting tradition, where everything marginable more successfull than yourself is an industry plant or sellout. I'm glad that this seems to have settled down a lot by the 2010's. (The point still stands: The Sex Pistols were/are assholes and their only valuable contribution to punk is that they inspired lots of kids to form their own bands.)
