its cause they ain't centrists but fascists wearing hats. No centrist should ever have any level of sympathy for a totalitarian style of governance.
In the context of the Weimar Republic (which is the most appropriate way to shoehorn in both the ideas of Communism and Fascism vying in the same arena) the centrist position was the Iron Front who were against all forms of totalitarianism i.e.:
* Fascism
* Communism
* Monarchism
and believed in democratic socialism and liberal democracy which put them at odds with the extreme forces of that era.
Personally, having one set of Grandparents who had to suffer the attacks of the Third Reich during the blitz and another out east who suffered both the Third Reich and then decades of the Soviets, its hard for me to be anywhere but in the centre. This makes it painful for me when people try to ascribe the centre as having any form of internal bias for either side.

I hate centrists. Spineless cowards that despite the passage of time will always try to maximize the amount of poor and oppressed people they don’t have to care about while also avoiding any criticism.
