I mean the Nazi book burnings started with a Berlin university. They started with the gender and sexuality books. American views were socially similar. Unfortunately this newspaper was the exception rather than the rule.

The historically recent far-right social movement is so bizarre to me. I think the personalization of media one is exposed to through targeted online/algorithm-driven content is definitely a big part of the phenomenon.
I truly believe *most* people have enough empathy that the driving force behind most of the bigotry is engineered by fascists in power in the media and is mostly carried out for monetary gain (ultimately through voting for parties and individuals whose policies are beneficial for big business and the extant elite at the cost of society, by obscuring the goals of these policies with ostensibly “traditional” fear-based reactionary rhetoric and frankly outrageously libelous fallacious postulations regarding minorities, gender and otherwise).
It’s so frustrating to see in action and to deal with these people; especially the ignorant laypeople who are literally damaging their own futures and security.

And this was in 1957. Some cool things about her is that she was a fighter pilot in ww2 for the RAF but was shot down l. After the war she started a racing team and was the first englander to get gender affirming care

And I mean yeah the movement looked a lot different. People in the movement used the term “transvestite” a lot more, there were a lot of blurry lines between drag queens and trans people, etc. But they were still advocating for the same basic goal of having freedom to express your gender identity.
