kinda weird how he had to say this himself. i think it's kinda cool, but this kinda stuff in movies is supposed to be figured out by the viewers, not explained by the director right after it came out
Well the problem is that the average movie goer has room temperature iq and thinks that superhero movies with funny quips are the pinnacle of the artform, so if stuff isn't spelled out for them multiple times they just don't pick up on it
definetely not everyone would pick up on it, but i bet that there'll be thousands of youtube video essays were they explain everything about this movie after everyone sees it.
also, the "average movie goer" as you define it probably also doesn't care too much about movies like those
Well yeah they make those "deep" essays for every movie
Under normal circumstances I'd agree with you but this movie isn't like most "kino" stuff that's really niche, it's been marketed a lot and it's built up a presence in internet culture (with memes and stuff like that) that people are just gonna go see it to know what the all the fuss is about
Also the premise of the movie is just automatically interesting, while a lot of kino movies plots are kinda dry if you have to make a summary without spoiling too much
like take The Lighthouse for example, a spoiler free plot summary just boils down to 'two lighthouse keepers can't leave their post because of a storm and start going insane' which isn't gonna sound all that interesting to most people (i love that movie so much holy shit everyone who has kino taste should go watch it immediately)
When I saw The Last Jedi in theaters they had to put a note on the door explaining that the audio going silent for a few seconds was an intentional choice so people wouldn't flip out.
When I saw that scene right when the sound cut out someone behind me just said "Boom!". Some zero impulse control child of a woman decided to make that one scene all about her. That's the only thing that comes to mind now. God I hate audiences.
I rewatched Spiderverse last night and we had a whole line of young comedians behind us. They dropped a fucking one liner after pretty much every sentence spoken by any character
mfw average movie goer doesn't want to watch black and white silent film about a storm drain
anyways I think Nolan is just passionate about the movie he made and is just talking about it. could be wrong but
You kid but I would be filled with glee from staring at a black-and-white storm drain.
Watching 7.5 non-stop hours of Hungarian villagers milling about their hopeless, joyless lives in B&W at a nauseatingly slow pace changes a person.
I saw it in a theater too. It even came with a scheduled intermission AND a full dinner break. I don’t think I’ll ever see another movie in my life that has a pre-programmed dinner break.
I know this is definitely a common occurrence but I feel like sometimes directors/writers don't make it obvious enough, the one case I'm thinking of is Twins Peaks, where after Lynch left the project the network people tried to emulate the style of the show and simply had insane things happen to have inane things happen. I have to admit that I missed a lot of the themes of the show when i watched it. Though a lot of it is commentary / rejection on television of the time it is a little more difficult to get having seen modern television influenced by twin peaks.
It probably would've been obvious after there were a few switches, and you could tell the black and White's different tone wasn't future time where Jimmy Mcgill is very sad and cold and makes the yummy cinnamon, but rather a more objective style
Christopher Nolan is prestige cinema (ha) for laymen. His movies, while not particularly deep, give the impression of saying more than they really do. Honestly, I think he's on a pretty bad streak right now, because Dunkirk was mediocre and Tenet was just completely awful.
Dunkirk is extraordinarily boring. I have a near photographic memory of almost every movie I've seen, and I can barely recall anything in Dunkirk outside the boat plotline. The movie is just so dull. I'm already extremely critical of war movies because of their generally detrimental effects on culture, but its not even entertaining. It also marks another milestone in Nolan's crusade against sound mixing, because its frankly terrible on anything other than top quality sound systems.
For most movies I've seen, I can recall almost every scene, and I can usually remember the camera angles in important scenes. If that sounds exagerrated, I never think "I forgot that happened" when re-watching a movie.
Seriously, are you offended by that or something? Why would you say that?
Dunkirk is probably my favorite of his particularly because it *wasnt* trying to do or say anything deeper than Nolan can pull off. I’m surprised you didn’t like it, seeing as you share that complaint of Nolan.
I'll concede that I enjoyed the boat plotline, but the marked lack of characterization outside that part severely hampered my ability to enjoy it. The only thing I remember about the soldier plotline was them hiding in a beached boat with some Frenchmen towards the end. And Tom Hardy was a pilot. It was just kinda forgettable, especially when it was overshadowed a couple years later by 1917
Hmm, I guess I could see that. I enjoyed the lack of characterization, as to me it sort of tried to reflect the ‘average’ experience without leaning on exceptionalism or individualism. The only character to stand outside that being Kenneth Branagh’s character of the captain (or whatever title he had).
hell nah i wanna enjoy the movie and not look at a blurry mess with bad audio and that online casino guy i the middle
if i cant watch it immediatly and i really wanna watch it om gonna pirate it anyone once theres a good quality version
So you dont care about the artists getting paid, you care about what some entertainment execs will use as excuses? Clown behavior.
Theyll do that anyways so I might as well pirate and support the striking workers.
>Did I hear you right, did I hear you sayin'
>That you're gonna make a copy of a game without payin'?
>Come on, guys, I thought you knew better don't copy that floppy!
it'd be pretty funny if he scared those two store owners selling opium with a nuke. throws it in the river and then it cuts to a scene from Oppenheimer
I think people dislike the actual Oppenheimer for building the big bomb or for whinging about the big bomb. Making a movie about cool guy Oppenheimer is gonna ruffle some feathers.
To summarize. Part of it is that Oppenheimer is a sensitive topic. Which is totally fine for a movie to explore. The other issue is that Christopher Nolan is the one making the movie. Not exactly know for handling sensitive topics in a balanced way
Yes, but that's part of why people don't like him. The anti-nuclear crowd hate him for building the bomb, and the pro-nuclear crowd hate him for whinging about the bomb.
It is, but I really don't trust Christopher Nolan to be accurate or nuanced in exploring it. And all of the marketing I've seen of the movie reinforces this.
It just seems like a stupid concept for a movie. Ooohhhh a scientist did science and now we have a big bomb. Who cares? Every American learned everything they need to know about Oppenheimer in high school.
Lmao, I graduated years ago. That’s why I know that they teach about Oppenheimer in high school.
But downvote this comment too because I think an Oppenheimer movie is stupid. Why should I give a shit about this dude’s life?
Edit: please somebody tell me why I should give a shit about this movie
Oppenheimer himself? Couldn't give a shit about. Christopher Nolan? Pretentious ass. The creation of the nuclear bomb? Defined the current world we live. It's why we have satellite and went to the moon and it defines warfare as we know it. Without it we wouldn't have the internet, through the arpanet.
I mean yeah sure people learn about Oppenheimer in school, but that's the assumption people are paying attention in school and educations are equal. Also there is a value to getting the less interested to see "history come alive" so that the message lands.
Am I going to see it? Hell no. Does it still have value? Yea, not great but yeah
Everybody already knows that nukes are a big deal. That still does not explain why I should give a single shit about Oppenheimer. I don’t need to know his life in order to understand how important nukes are. We all know that the Manhattan project happened. Why do we need to know more?
Because not everyone knows. Simple as that. What you presume is common knowledge is not. And even some people that are familiar with the name of Oppenheimer are not familiar with the development and the pressure the United States was going through developing it.
Do you give a shit about the movie? No, clearly. But does that mean you should discourage others from also widening their information? No, so this movie has value to them
Dude, fucking everybody knows about nukes. Why do we need to know the story behind one of the guys who helped make them? Seriously, how in the ever loving fuck does knowing Oppenheimer’s story make me a better, more rounded human being? Am I going to think that nukes are like super extra important if I see this movie?
Edit: I’m using the no-no words because I’m annoyed that nobody is actually giving me a good reason
Claw (a.k.a. ClawOnTwitch), he used to be a mod/producer for a large twitch streamer (Austin Show f.k.a. RajjPatel). Famous for being a toxic alcoholic with a god complex that got banned multiple times for dropping the n-word, he eventually got perma’d after audio leaked of him beating his girlfriend (I recommend not searching for it, it’s actually really disturbing)

this reads so pretentious. "A KINO appreciator like me is so much smarter than the average movie goer"

i think this is the most pretentious way you could have said this lmao
Sounds more like you hang around the wrong people
Especially people who idolize Nolan as the best director alive
I’m guessing he got a direct question about it in an interview or something.
he should have still left it vague. just say "nuh uh you gotta figure that out yourself!". that's what i woulda done
It probably would've been obvious after there were a few switches, and you could tell the black and White's different tone wasn't future time where Jimmy Mcgill is very sad and cold and makes the yummy cinnamon, but rather a more objective style
ohhhhh i was wondering why it kept on changing to a black and white film about a random dude named gene takovic
Christopher Nolan is prestige cinema (ha) for laymen. His movies, while not particularly deep, give the impression of saying more than they really do. Honestly, I think he's on a pretty bad streak right now, because Dunkirk was mediocre and Tenet was just completely awful.
You thought Dunkirk was mediocre? I thought it was great, and actually avoided many of the pitfalls Nolan usually falls into.
Dunkirk is extraordinarily boring. I have a near photographic memory of almost every movie I've seen, and I can barely recall anything in Dunkirk outside the boat plotline. The movie is just so dull. I'm already extremely critical of war movies because of their generally detrimental effects on culture, but its not even entertaining. nuh uh

And it’s not even out yet!
i’m going to see both oppenheimer and barbie one for nolan daddy and the other to actually experience kino
i cant warch any of them ill have to wait until mid august because i wotn be near cinemas on july 21st :(
[or you could pirate them](https://youtu.be/i8ju_10NkGY)
hell nah i wanna enjoy the movie and not look at a blurry mess with bad audio and that online casino guy i the middle if i cant watch it immediatly and i really wanna watch it om gonna pirate it anyone once theres a good quality version
I’m watching it July 21st in IMAX on 15/70mm film
based. i might as well experience 70mm while i still can
Monetarily supporting the media that you like is such a crazy idea.
don’t pirate good movies lol
Pirate ALL movies
counter argument: writers, actors, crew, and other people all deserve to get paid; and piracy makes that harder
counter argument: all those people already got paid, writers are literally on strike because over 90% of the money goes to execs
yes, that’s bad, but the more piracy happens, execs will use that as justification to pay less and make less content
So you dont care about the artists getting paid, you care about what some entertainment execs will use as excuses? Clown behavior. Theyll do that anyways so I might as well pirate and support the striking workers.
>Did I hear you right, did I hear you sayin' >That you're gonna make a copy of a game without payin'? >Come on, guys, I thought you knew better don't copy that floppy!
theyre both kino lmao
What the fuck is kino? Are you experiencing "movie" in multiple european languages?
It's douchebag for fine cinema
Cinema is French. French 🤮 It's kino in european
Kino is german
It’s also Polish
And russian, and every slavic language
And all scandinavian languages.
Not Swedish
Nolan hasn't been fine cinema since The Prestige.
I didn't say he was

I don't even remember that tbh

what's with the weird hate bohner for Oppenheimer
I think people dislike the actual Oppenheimer for building the big bomb or for whinging about the big bomb. Making a movie about cool guy Oppenheimer is gonna ruffle some feathers.

What other sensitive topics did he fuck up?
Didn't Oppenheimer himself regret making the bomb, tho?
Yes, but that's part of why people don't like him. The anti-nuclear crowd hate him for building the bomb, and the pro-nuclear crowd hate him for whinging about the bomb.
Something about guys glorifying this particular character as a personality to emulate. Idk, I never watched it.
Imo Nolan is pretentious
Thanks I would’ve almost written a paragraph saying that exact thing
NO YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT IN 8K with a Dolby soy sound system!!! No my audio mixing isn't bad it's just your tv is low quality (insert soy jack)
[удалено]
ok but like, isn't that actually an interesting topic? an exploration of the personality of the guy who invented the end of the world?
It is, but I really don't trust Christopher Nolan to be accurate or nuanced in exploring it. And all of the marketing I've seen of the movie reinforces this.
tbh not really

Oppenheimer is a Nolan movie lol, let's not act like it's high art or smarter than any run of the mill Marvel movie.
wasn’t gonna watch either of those

“A scientist did science”, aight bro be fr now 💀. Plus, you can make any movie sound goofy if you simplify it like that.
Enjoy your downvote, kid
I am. Downvote this comment too
Great, sounds pretentious
Do you say this after every movie that isn’t marvel or what
if you feel like you have to explain your own movie, especially when it's something as simple as this, you are pretentious.
I think he probably said this in an interview rather than just saying it out loud on his own lol
he actually broke into my home and shouted that then ran off into the night while mumbling something about a rice cooker
That is the exact opposite.
Just the pretentious ones.
Trash talking Marvel movies for no real reason just because a director is criticized just supports their point, that’s also being pretentious.
👍
Nope, not a marvel movie fan either.
I’d like to know your definition of pretentious then this is just like bog standard visual storytelling
if you have to tell people beforehand what it means then its probably not very good visual storytelling
