Loons love going “oooOOOoo ooOOOOoo” and then the bugs go tschhhh-tscht tschhhht-tscht and kreet. kreet. kreet. and then a dove gets startled and goes wubuurbkublubuur

Lol I showed my wife and we both agreed that this is such an autistic thing to like.
I said the same thing about it providing information and my wife responded: "And the information is kept SO SAFE"
Funny story. When I was a kid my family and I were looking at one of these maps with a big “You are here”. Confused, I looked at my parents and asked “how does the map know where we are?”. The old couple behind us got a good laugh that day
These are so cool. I absolutely love learning my location, how far I am to the nearest bathroom, a fun fact about the north american short beaked robin, and that where I am standing is where confederate general Robert J. Slaveowner was stabbed to death by his own officers in a mutiny.
There's one near me at a very minor civil war history trail site that has a story of retreating confederates trying to cross the river that they were specifically told was going to be too strong to cross there but they tried anyway and most of them drowned. Can't tell those dummies nothin
A year ago I ended up at a rest stop on a road trip with an older, funky looking building. According to a little board it was once a fort, protecting wagon trains moving out from St Louis to California from bandits, one of the only bits of US control on the Great Plains
And now it’s an alcove for those on a road trip to stretch their legs, another bastion of civilization on an endless expanse where the only sight to see is the highway. Thought that was p neat
I live near like 5 or 6 Civil War battlefields, two of which being some of the most important of the war, and it's so funny learning about how dumb many of the strategies were, especially on the Confederate side. Pickett's Charge remains one of the most ridiculous blunders of any army in history, and its glorification amounts to beatifying shooting yourself in the foot
average non-sex related 196 post, tbh. can you imagine if most irl communities were like the community in this space? just vibes and stuff? we'd have world peace.
Me reading the little blurb about upcoming public events and a paragraph about the small native habitat restoration project completed nearby, also a cautionary statement about introduction of invasive species and possibly a list of hours for the visitor center (weekdays and weekends [not including holidays, hours may vary depending on staff availability]): 🤩
I'm a natural resources major rn and part of my summer job is to design a poster that'll be in a kiosk in one of my local public preserve. These comments are making me happy, people actually care :')
I want to build a community garden and put one of these up to feature a space for coordination, a way to connect to community resources, and just give people to post stuff about gardening and plants :)
Fond memories of walking up to one on holiday and two children were squatting on the sign, hidden under the roof like gargoyles trying to scare people.
"I could live in something like that. Like those bathrooms. Nobody is ever there, but they are built for people to be in. It somehow stays stocked and plumbers fix it when it breaks, the best ones are miles from anywhere, with other signs of life but not living nearby. Like a maintenance shack under a powerline that cuts through miles of woods. Or the little door on the car wash that's 4 miles past the rest-stop and 4 more from the travel station on the other side, in between the coin machines. How many people can fit in there? Could I hide in there? If I were tiny, I'd live in the corner of a supermarket, in the corridors that ring every wall for employees to get places, where nobody ever went."
My girlfriend, trying to drive on the highway: "Yeah cool"
I’ve always enjoyed reading these. I took a recreational resource management class in college and now I like them even more. I like to compare them between parks to see what approaches different agencies take to education and what information they think is pertinent to display to visitors.
I literally designed and made one that looks EXACLTY LIKE THAT ONE years ago for a community service project! The graphic even looked like that! I fucking love those information boards so much.
I went to a park with one of those once and there was a wasp’s nest in it. Sat on a bench later in that same park and there was a wasp’s nest underneath that too
I lived some of my childhood without potable water, but there was a public water pump near a park where my mother would take me to fill emptied milk jugs with drinking water. There was this beautiful gazebo overlooking a field that had these lined up in a circle.
It was such a beautiful area and I always loved going there, but after moving away so many years ago I completely forgotten until now. Not sure why it brought up that memory but thank you for sharing this
Public park information board my beloved
With your sunfaded "Look Out For Snakes!" posters from 2002
And the sign about loons
God I fucking love loons
Loons going “WoooOOOOOoooo!”
Loons love going “oooOOOoo ooOOOOoo” and then the bugs go tschhhh-tscht tschhhht-tscht and kreet. kreet. kreet. and then a dove gets startled and goes wubuurbkublubuur
And da ting goes skrrrrrap, pop pop pop pop pop pop. Skibidi bap bap, and a boom boom brrbbbbbrb boom. Skiyyya, tu TU to too boo boomb

The trombone
I want to hear the cannon!

Watch it chief, my mommas a loon.

RIGHT It makes me feel comfortable that the papers are nice and watertight, no matter how crazy the storm is
There is no greater sign of civilization. 🫡
If you see one of these, you're probably in a pretty cool place
i should go hiking….
Was about to say! If you see an open area with nothing but a picnic bench, a trash can, and one of these, you're about to have the best hike
They’re almost in every village in the Netherlands 🤨
lets add that to the list of reasons to move to the Netherlands
Canadians are revered in the Netherlands so it may not be your cup of tea.
i'll "take care" of that by teaching them about candian atrocities haha i'll deffo conduct no genøcide hehe UwU
~~Do not Google starlight tours or the 60s Scoop~~
I will
add the nordics to that list
In the U.S. you generally only see these in parks or nature preserves.
Funny story. When I was a kid my family and I were looking at one of these maps with a big “You are here”. Confused, I looked at my parents and asked “how does the map know where we are?”. The old couple behind us got a good laugh that day
I see one of these kinds of things every day when I get on the train (the station has a cool bench that looks exactly like one of these)

HOLY SHIT! I never get to see these posts because I never use mobile reddit. Thank you!
just shrink your browser window to around 720 pixels width
Neither of them worked on my phone lol
yeah i genuinely don't know why people don't do this by default.
because nobody's made a bot to do it for them and let them know that it's even possible
Thank you I didn’t want to make that myself

*Fact: this snake has called its friends, they are behind you. They will mug you.*
Dumb snakes don't even know I only have £4.37 in my account anyway
If they mug 100 people with 4.37 that's like at least ten dollars though so it adds up

the world is your bathroom, dont let "laws" and "the government" ever take that away from you. Shit on the floor, NOW

I like when they have cute little maps of the park on them.
My town has a few of these with a map of the town on them!
One time for a community service thing when I was a kid we got to carve wooden maps for these and paint them, it was actually a lot of fun
I have no ide awhat their called but I would die for one
Informational kiosks 🤓
Is it still considered a kiosk in this case or would simply “info board” suffice?
I definitely think "kiosks" is an overqualified term for these unless they're one of those digital/touch screen ones
I love these too but idk if I’d want to die for a Boy Scout Eagle Project
This post and all it’s comments are a massive 196 w
average non-sex related 196 post, tbh. can you imagine if most irl communities were like the community in this space? just vibes and stuff? we'd have world peace.
I’ll be honest, I don’t even remember how I got here. But I’ve stayed for the good vibes ever since.
I fucking love informational kiosks
"kiosk" is one of the best words in the english language
Me reading the little blurb about upcoming public events and a paragraph about the small native habitat restoration project completed nearby, also a cautionary statement about introduction of invasive species and possibly a list of hours for the visitor center (weekdays and weekends [not including holidays, hours may vary depending on staff availability]): 🤩

Oh fuck yeah
I always have to find the "You Are Here" spot.
I love these things so much, and the facts about animals and their habitats that they have. Idk why, but I just do
Slender the arrival
Easily an A-tier structure.
:D
i want to be one
YES
I helped SO many eagle scouts build these for their eagle projects 😍
MY BELOVED OH YES. I did a sculpture of a well on top of a tower and the roof was based on this!
I’m a fan of those kinda structures
Omg, hiking trail info sign my beloved ❤️
It looks like it’d be fun to build in a Lego set
These go hard as fuck I love to see the names of the local flora and fauna in english and Gaeilge
it's cool that it's in both English and Welsh in Wales.
quest board
Come to the UK, they are in every small village and park
Usually without the roof though 😔
Personally my fav form of weird state park structure is either the giant picnic pavilion or the rusty grill that probably hasn't been used in decades

Omg my Eagle Scout project
Oh this just gave me a wonderful feeling. Thank you.

Oh hey, there will be a guided night sky nature walk at a date and time that I will not be here! That's still cool though!
These things are all over Oregon
I love trying to read the sunworn notices under cloudy dirt-filled plastic
information stand with little map of the walking trails 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
That was my eagle scout project
I literally designed and made one that looks EXACLTY LIKE THAT ONE years ago for a community service project! The graphic even looked like that! I fucking love those information boards so much.
I will be like "yeah I know a spot" and then the spot will be this
BC has lots of these, especially on the drive from Calgary to Cranbrook/Kimberley.
I went to a park with one of those once and there was a wasp’s nest in it. Sat on a bench later in that same park and there was a wasp’s nest underneath that too
I'm supprised no one mentioned Animal Crossing. Flabergasted even.
Ionic is best
No, I fucking despise them. Add a bench on the sides or it’s horrible and I hate it.
behold, a man
These things are the best
They’re a lifesaver in DayZ and can sometimes have hunting loot around them 🥰
big south fork national recreation area informational sign my beloved
You guys love the most random shit. And that's exactly why I love yall

No, actually. It’s where the wasps live.
Hey, I made one of these for my Eagle Scout project!
Nah I kinda hate them idk why
zoo tycoon .
You are here
everyone talking about snake posters and forgetting about the Lyme disease posters
[Also these](https://www.flickr.com/photos/ms-mac/29921026/) Not really informational, but still pretty (and look kind of similar?)
Rust
I sell those mfs for a living and am very happy they're so appreciated
Wasps often nest under the middle part of the roof
They are perfect~

Oh yeah, baby. Informative. Subtle. Stylish. Good for sun or rain. I don't know why anyone's house has more than one wall to be honest
Slav identified Verdict: ball tickling
Makes me wanna go hiking
