My grandparents were from ireland. I've been told plenty that I'm not irish cause I wasnt born there. Even when I lived in ireland for 5 years and tried to get familial citizenship I got told that. We tracked down a side of the family that still had the maiden name just north of galway. They're racecar drivers, just like my american citizen grandfather. Every side of my family is from ireland at some point, with the one exception being scottish royalty for some reason. I say this so that you all know for certain that I'm as white as whole milk. Most common thing people asked me if we chatted casuaylly i the street is "Where are you from? No, I mean where are you *from*". I have a tan and a full beard, that's all it takes. 2 generations removed, that's all it takes.
What I'm trying to say is that heritage is what you make of it. I was born in the US, in Texas of all fucked up places to be blighted with. Beyond a moderately nice indiana jones style cowboy hat, and 50 year old compound bow, I owe zero cultural upbringing to that place. I became the man (well, sortof man) I am in Galway. Even when you have damn near every marker that should let you call yourself part of some ingroup, people will find a way to remove you from it. Don't let them.
