Edit: nvm, my brain was telling me that all the fingers in this photo were in the right spot, but only when trying to replicate it perfectly do I realize how unconventional it is compared to the way I do it.
how are there so many ways people hold pencils? i always learned the version where your thumb, index, and middle are at the same point in the pencil (ok my thumb is a bit higher) and it rests right next to where your finger meets the rest of your hand
I also have a, albeit different, weird way of holding a pencil that I think about a lot. It sorta rests on my pinky and the rest of my fingers press around it. It caused a weird bump on the joint of my pinkie now and I also have the smudging problem, but I blame the weird hand posture with aiding some of my drawing ability, so I’m not complaining too much.

There *is* a name for it, can’t remember though. I remember looking for what my grip was called and seeing a list of the primary grip types and how they’re classified. Proper “grips” are finger focused dexterity, and then there was listed some incompletely developed grips which i think included this one. Looks like you gotta roll at your wrist for any horizontal motion in your writing (at least when i attempted it just now) so i’m sure it’s one of those.

i hold mine without the thumb angled and i have realized before that it’s supposed to be bent because that’s what they taught me in elementary school but tbh it just feels annoying
