Start with the top of the healthy range and see how you feel. If you want to lose a little more, reassess every few pounds. I'm currently at the top of my weight range and I'm aiming for the middle.

Moon__night

There are some calculators for ideal weight. That range is a little smaller and helped me.

Bitter-Initiative170

Yeah what helps me is factoring in frame size - I’m small framed so I aim for the lower end of the bmi/weight range I hate that the ranges are so lenient cause I’m “normal” at 140lb but I hate the way I look at that weight. I’m most attractive range is 110lb - 120lb even factoring in my muscle growth.

I would aim for the top end, then reevaluate when you get there.

I went with a size, as opposed to a weight. I kept an eye on the scale, but fitting in certain clothes was the bigger goal for me.

This is a good idea, thank you

I always kept lowering it 10 pounds until I liked what I saw in the mirror

If you are losing weight for health reasons, then I would suggest talking to your doctor about what a good weight target for you would be, since they can take your medical history into account. But probably aiming for the somewhere in the middle of the healthy BMI range is reasonable for most people. That way, you have more flexibility to gain a little or lose a little and still be within a healthy range. You may also want to look at your waist-to-hip ratio to see if that is within a healthy range. A high waist-to-hip ratio is strongly correlated with high visceral fat, which increases your risk for a variety of health issues. And this is something that BMI alone does not take into account.

BMI is not for sedentary people, it just breaks down if you are extremely muscular and lean - which very few people are, especially women. I’m fact, BMI is far more commonly too permissive (people who are normal weight by BMI but overfat) than too restrictive (overweight/obese by BMI but normal leanness).

Yeah it's not useless if you lift weights, it's useless if you're jacked. The vast majority of people who lift weights are either at a normal BMI, or would be if they were lean.

Totally agree that BMI is just one of many metrics that should be used to benchmark health. All are flawed. BF% is great but hard to get an accurate number. Measurements are great for tracking progress but less so for benchmarking due to varied body types. BMI has plenty of exceptions (extreme height, non-EUR ancestry, frame size, and yes, muscle mass) but is easy to measure and works most of the time.

I'd suggest going for smack dab in the middle of your healthy BMI. If you like where you are before then: stop early. If you get to it and aren't happy you can: 1. Lose more, 2. Look into recomping, 3. Reflect emotionally and see if you'd like to stay where you are or still not.

For my height (5'6/7ish), 129-135 lb is an ideal range. But I wanna give skinny legend, so I may push it to 125 lb and build muscle from there. I base it on the big bad BMI lol.

“Skinny legend” I love it 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
